1985 GL1200 A - Lot of work
In Jan 2011 I bought a used 85 GL1200 A with only 38k on it.

After less than 100 miles the problems started. Thanks to this great site and a few others i have been able to do a lot of work the past two weekends.

* Water Pump - oil leak
* Bad Stator
* Worn Timing Belts
* Bad Rear shocks

Only thing left on my list is the rear shocks and I have all the parts.

Thanks to all of you for writing up such great "How to" posts...

Timing belts should not be worn as to need replacemant at 38K miles. Mine have 75K miles on them and although I took the covers off to replace them I did not do so even though I had new ones. New belts were from the UK and were not quite as heavy as the originals. Luck.

You cann't tell much about the timing belts by just looking at them. If you do not know how old the belts are CHANGE THEM. Cheap insurance. Poorboy

I change my belts every 40,000 kl, I do not want bent valves over $20 worth of belts.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane

Yeah I followed the advice i have read on here and just changed them out to be safe.

I already had it open to apply the "Poorboy" kit.

I also put new hoses, new thermostat while changing out the water pump.

Put new plugs since I pulled them while i was doing the timing belts.

Now at least I know what I have inside there.

All the parts came in to rebuild the rear shocks so that will be the next project.
