Testing fuel pump on 85 Aspy

I think I have decided to use a Bestest fuel pump from O'Rileys #BE8016S as I can fit it into the original bracket. I plan to use two brass 90 degree fittings to "flip" the output up and over the top of the pump toward the carbs. I fit it all in loosely and it appears will work OK. I hooked the pump to the tank and jumpered the pump to the connection under the filler tray to test. In 5 seconds it pumped 150cc of gas or 1800cc/min. My question now is this - the pump won't start with the ignition on until I hit the starter button, then it pumps until I turn the ignition off. Is that normal?

That is normal.

A safety thing.

If the engine stops, the pump will not pump even if the IGN is turned on.

So if I hit the kill switch it will stop the pump? I just didn't expect it to keep pumping after I released the starter button. Almost overfilled my measuring device (wife's glass measuring cup)!

Now to fabricate what I need to raise the original mount about an inch...

Tricky, Would running the pump constantly, without the relay damage it?

i dont think it'll damage the pump but i thinks hondas idea was that by pulsing it at low rpms you wouldn't have to worry about overpowering the carb float needles

Neoracer, Thanks for the reply. I have an old Wheel Horse garden tractor and I may install a Honda (car) pump on it. The 1980 pump used on a 1.8 L is supposed to be a good replacement for the 1200 pump. It looks a lot like the original. So far I haven't heard of anyone using one. Part #: AFE8316. Parts Warehouse has them as do most parts stores.

Finally got the pump mounts fabricated and the pump mounted, wired in and plumbed in. Bike fires right up and idles fine. Let it sit and run for about 15 minutes with no leaks. Had to run to a nieces birthday party so won't be able to give it a test ride till after work tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

So this is the pump you have used (Bestest fuel pump from O'Rileys #BE8016S) and you have hooked it up to the two wires that ran the original OEM pump?

Give it a good test and let us know how it works. and photographs of the installation and any brackets you fabricated.

If it is OK we can add it to the list of replaceable parts.

Yes, I used the Bestest from O'Rileys and it is wired to the original power source. I will run if for a few days to test for leaks or other issues and if all is well I will post some pics of it mounted. Now I didn't worry about it being pretty because my bike has side covers that completely cover the sides of the bike and hide the carbs, fuel pump, etc. However the mount doesn't look bad and the plumbling could be made "prettier", I used copper fittings but with a little searching a person could find make a slicker looking set up.
