86 Carb Wierdness
Ok, so I pulled my carbs today in hopes of figuring out why its not running well. I want to be prepared for spring to ACTUALLY get to Illinois so I can ride.

First, a question... has anyone done a step-by-step with pictures breakdown of the removal and reinstall of carbs in this bike? Wasn't drastically different than my gl100, but had some struggles and I'm guessing there is a better way...

Second, within MINUTES of pulling the carbs out I think I found what may be the ENTIRE problem:

This picture is LITERALLY what I saw when I took the float bowl cover off. I had done NOTHING else at this point.

Can anyone see what I saw?

My goodness! Screw that sucker back in. I can't imagine how that happened unless some po had the carb off before.

The PO "had the carbs done" as he put it.......

HOW DO YOU MISS SCREWING IN A JET?!?!?

WOW.

So the problem symptoms:
Significant off idle stumble
Backfires
Intermittent power loss

Yep... those all seem to have an explanation now!

sounds like they just weren't tightened enough and after awhile loosened up,unless the bike wasn't run at all after the rebuild, but if you bought it because he couldn't figure out the problem and got it at a good price, you might have scored on it overall

Well, I got it for $2500 with the caveat that "it needs synced or something".... I don't think I did too bad!

I believe so....

I did take the rest of the float bowls off and all of the rest of the carbs look fine. I'm going to go ahead and run some carb cleaner through the jets and get the little bit of gunk thats in the bowls out, but she looks cleaner than other bikes I've seen that run fine!!

My next challenge is getting the carbs BACK IN. After taking off the lower faring, there was still a tab that hangs down that got in the way.

Anyone have any suggestions on getting these puppys back in the bike easily?

the seat and tank are probably the two easiest things you'll learn to do,just seems more complicated than it really is

To remove the seat and tank is a five minute job at most. I have had my seat off so many times I don't even put the two bolts back in. The seat is under the trunk backrest and is locked at the front. I also have a heavy bungee cord hooked to the hand rails, holding the back section of my sheepskin on. I am sitting on it while in motion so where could it go. If I crash and the seat comes off I really don't care at that point. Just send the rescue squad.

Well, my Corbin is bolted on, and with the trunk relocation bracketry I made, it doesn't sit under the trunk ... and I have a passenger headset wire running up through the hole for my backrest .....
.... but yeah, 5 minute job at most.

Open tak top, remove tray. 2 seat bolts, remove seat to safety. Pull two flexible front pieces beside fork tunnel, remove total of 4 - 10mm headed bolts, ease top faux tank off in one piece easing it back and up.

When replacing, there is a cable on left side to tuck under.
