Maintenance for Dummies and The Mechanically Inept
Yes, that's me and I'm willing to learn.

So, what is a good basic list of little projects that we can be doing to La Wing?

I've seen Air and Fuel filters, among other scattered little projects. Can you toss in your $.02 on a basic list on little projects any idiot can do?

Bring it, I'm gonna put a wrench on this bike yet!

next projects would be stator and regulator connector fixes,rear flange Moly 60 treatment,dogbone fuse replacement,those 3 pretty much rank up near top

Great post I am all ears for any extra info. I am mechanically inclined but rather intimidated with all the stuff on a wing. Car motors seemed so much more straight forward.

Here are a few more things to think about. If you don't know how old your Timing belts are you might want to change them, I change mine every 50,000 Kilometers. Age, condition and air pressure of your tires are very important. I always flush and change my brake and clutch fluids and coolant every two years. I change my oil and filter every 5,000 Kilometers.

A great idea is to sit down and read all the sections in the Tech Center. Projects, upgrades, and maintenance issues are all covered, many with photo step by steps. That's where I learned to do most all my stuff. Don't be worried about the motor, once you start working on it you'll discover it is more like a car motor then a motorcycle. Hence the two front timing belts like most Subaru's or any other boxer type motor. Next, always always ask your questions here. Half my questions have been asked by someone else and I read the answer's and wala, so that's how its done.

Hello fellow dummies!

I'VE FOUND IT USEFUL TO invest about $60 in a Honda GL1200 official shop manual which really does give step-by-step instructions on how to take things apart and get them back together. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE 5-6 OF THEM FOR SALE on eBay.

The Clymer and Haynes shop manuals are a bit less expensive and O.K. (even though they have a few mistakes in them) but a little less detailed than the Honda ones -- which were, in fact, originally printed for dealers' mechanics.

You won't be sorry Marty ... especially when it saves you a few hours from trial and error. However, some times you REALLY need the experienced Wingers here to get through some even simple stuff. For example, I really had no idea EXACTLY how to correctly mount floor boards and heel-toe shifter on my Wing. Without the guidance here ... I would still be trying to figure out how to get them on. After being talked through it ... of course NOW it's easy.

I tried to find some info on the "rear flange Moly 60" treatment but came up empty. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Charley, I got mine at my local Honda dealer. High cost for a small tube, but it goes a long way.

There's a dealer out there named Bernardi who sells Honda odds and ends for cars, and with it Honda Moly 60 paste for $7.57 a tube.

I doubt the stuff for cars and bikes is a different Moly 60 (60% molybdenum disulfide + grease).

However, there's a relatively new product which does the same thing by DuPont called Krytox Teflon Bearing Grease. This super high temperatrue lubricant is super expensive at $30 for a 2oz tube! $-) At the same site, there are practical tips on "How to lubricate your drive shaft splines."
