rear shocks, boy did I mess up
I removed the rear shocks to replace the rubber boot on the shock from the bike before I bleed the air off and blew oil all over. :oops: :roll:

Now how do I know how much oil I need to have in it?

How do I make sure the old oil is all gone?

Where can I find a rubber boot to replace the one on there now?

I guess I don't need to rebuild the shock cause it was holding air or should I rebuild it now that I am in this fix?

I feel like a novice on this one? :ymblushing:

Sounds like something I would have done. #-O #-O If I were in that spot and could afford it, I'd go ahead and replace with Progressive shocks. If not, just hang on a bit and one of the resident experts will have a very accurate answer for you. :d :d

in a pinch it is possible to refill the shocks thru the air ports but its a slow process,if you were replacing the seals the req is approx 10.5 oz of atf,safe amount would be 9oz if your doing it thru the ports,your present atf probably is not really atf now

you can turn the shocks upside down and drain them but it takes about a day to drain them completely,the shock bellows are available thru any honda dealer on special order but below are several links where prices are discounted

waltharper : note if there are any clean spots on the ceiling in your garage then you still have oil in your shocks haha dont feel bad we all have done things like that. We learn by our mistakes and try not to do them again, just think you just taught someone a new ,not what to do good luck with your rebuild Hal

Walt, Go to the link posted by Vic. That is how I rebuilt mine, even built the tool in a similar manner. I ordered Progressive springs, factory seals, and refilled with ATF. Do what the Gambler says and you can't miss.


Oh, and if you were an A ganger or a nuke, I would't admit it here. (The former ET1(SS))

Sorry to hear about the shock explosion. I have a question about progressive air shocks! I have a set that is leaking from the cheap connectors . Is there a better connector/ hose set up for them I can use. The one they sent me with the shocks are plastic and seem very cheap. I have 300+ in air shocks that leak out totally within a couple of days.

Rob, I used the springs Progressive sent me for the bike, matching the part #. In Gambler's post, he does point out that the Progressives are taller. Not to worry, with the custom tool, they install just fine. Actually, next to the timing belts, one of the easiest things I've ever done to my Wing. I removed all the rear tupperware and cleaned many years of mung and drool while I was at it and fabricated a set of extensions for the trunk while I had it removed.

replacing the seals and refilling is easy and simple,even upgrading the springs with the progressive replacements for the stock shocks is not that hard,complete rebuild of the stock shocks with all parts is somewhere less than half of the new progressives

have progressives on one GL and upgrades on another and i really cant tell the difference except in my wallet,wish i'd known about the rebuilds about a year earlier

have two sets here i'm about to refurb soon and put on ebay

and rob,occasionally moving around the site will kick you back to a visitor status,happens to me all the time
