Success! - Photos - Carb Sync with my new CarbTune Pro
Happy Thanksgiving To All,

I got my new CarbTune Pro in the mail yesterday and set it up this morning. On a GL1200 my manuals say tune three against the #4 cyl. My number 4 cyl. reading is just about "off-the-chart" (top of the tube). I adjusted the others (cyls. 1,2, & 3) against themselves but was never able to get 4 to move at all. For kicks I changed the tubing around to make to make sure it was not a meter issue.

What gives? Ideas please.

Have a good holiday.

I use the Morgan carbtune, it came with restrictor valves which were placed in the tubes, I wonder if you couldnt do that with your model, although I would have thought that if they were needed they would have been included in the package.

Quote from manual "Damping is by a small airflow restricter in the rubber connecting tubes."

Just a thought
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

there is no adjustment for #4,only way that's going to change is if you lowered the idle setting, which should drop the vacuum level some
is it possible that the carbtunepro has some way to calibrate settings or anything? since i use the Morgan too there isn't any adj to make other than 1,2,3

you might try lowering the idle speed some to see if you can get better adjustablity between all four circuits

mine idles fine at 840-860 and they are all w/i 1hg when i did the final adjustments at 3200rpm's

happy thanksgiving

Did that. The restriction tubes comes with the meter & they're an integral part to the set-up. I think the meter set-up is OK. I need an interpretation of what it's telling me.

Thanks,

Right. No adjustment for #4. The others have to be matched to #4. I played around w/ the idle but #4 is still "off the hook"; really does not fluctuate. I think I have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Thanks,

if you had a vacuum leak i would think that vacuum level on #4 would be low, just how close were you able to sync them

if there is a vacuum leak you may be able to use vic's propane way to find it

another thought, have you tried to sync at your normal cruising rpm,i'd be more prone to want it there than at idle since idle means little when you are going down the road

Hello Again,

1,2,& 3 Close, close to equal; like I've read about on the web and in the manual.

So you think if I had a leak 4 would be low not high?

As far as syncing at road speed, I'm still undecided about that. I'm thick as a brick. I hear where you're coming from & tomorrow I'll try it but I'm on the fence. Everything I read says do it at idle.

Thanks. I'm still interested in all input about what would cause a high reading on the #4.

Here's a question: Is the meter being sucked or blown? Gotta be sucking right? Air in through the air filter then down through the airbox; on through the intake pipes where the vacuum plugs are. The plugs where the meter tubing connects at...so, if I tried the propane thing I would do it around the air intake gasket at #4?

Well, gotta run and get ready for turkey. I'll go back at it again tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Cold and wet & gray here. I can't wait to eat :YMPRAY: (I'm giving thanks).

Regards,

it really doesn't change much from the idle settings, its just more of a fine tune

Hello,

If you read my posts from yesterday you'd see I was having a little trouble syncing my carbs w/ my new Carbtune Pro. Well I went at it again today and had them done in about 20 minutes.

Here's what I had:

- The reading on the non-adjustable #4 cyl. meter tube was up at the top of the glass while all the other readings were down around the 1st quarter mark of their respective tubes.

Here's what I did:

- I abandoned my overly cautious approach to adjusting the screws today and starting w/ number 2 cyl., cranked the adjusting screw whole turns at a time. This immediately brought the #2 adjustment way up and the #4 tube reading way down. Then I went and fiddled w/ the #1 a bit and then on to #3 cyl. screw. In no time I had them all level.

It worked as advertised. There is a noticeable performance improvement with regard to acceleration and smoothness of shifting through out the entire gear range. With the limited distance I test rode my GL1200 I'm satisfied.

What I learned:

If your readings are off by a lot when you first hook up, make major adjustments on the sdjusting screws in order starting w/ #2, then #1, and then #3. When you get them in the ballpark, go through the order again, over & over, until they're all level. In the end, every 1/8 turn of a screwdriver made a difference. As you can see in the pictures I was able to get them perfect and I'm no mechanic.

I believe the order you do them in is the most important point (2,1,3).

Above is a photo of my wing. It was a non-running barn-beauty w/ 17,000 on it when I bought it last year. It's all fixed up now. I went 2-up to Nova Scotia w/ my 13yo son as planned this summer (3600 total miles). The bike performed beautifully.

Thanks for all your input. I love the forum.

glad to see that you have gotten your carbs synced now, dont know why but i thought you were using another type of sync tool other than the Morgan Carbtune
what i did find after doing mine is that it may take a couple tries to set idle speed, dont know whether it was just a sticking part or what but i finally got it down to 840-60 and 900-940 on my sei

glad you got it worked out. sometimes you just need to take a break then keep messin' with it later........

that is one pretty wing. Cleaner than new. Switch the Elite II's to Elite III's next time, you'll love 'em

Thanks Neo & 85,

Neo - I will check the idle tomorrow when I take her out and put a little distance on her. Today after I got it sync-ed I adjusted the idle back to normal (I had it up a little bit while sync-ing it) and it did not seem to fluctuate. Thanks for the tip. I will keep an eye on it.

86 - The photo is from last year, right after I washed off a few years of barn dust. I started my summer trip on the Dunlops and by the time I got down to Connecticut I had worn them down to the belts. In New Haven I was set to put Elite IIIs on and the manager talked me into Continental "ContiTours". He loved them on a Goldwing. I can't compare them against any other tire because this is the only new tire I've driven on this bike. I do like them and am satisfied. One of the best feelings in the world to me is new tires; whether on a car, bicycle, or bike - nothing like it - like a new pair of sneaks only better!

Thanks for the input guys. ^Smile^

I used to run Conti's, good tires but I like the Elite III's better.

To each his own, I'll take any tire with good rubber over a bald one!
