Testing the fuel pump relay
I purchased an 85 1200i last week and am trying to get it road-worthy. The bike runs about 1 minute fine but won't get around the block without dying. The irritating part is I drove the bike aboout 30 miles right after I bought it and it seemed to run OK. How do you test the fuel pump relay on an 85 1200i? I jumpered the fuel pump and checked the fuel flow (good). Fuel filter is good. No blockage in tank. New spark plugs installed. Bike will restart after 1/2 hour and exhibits same symptoms (starts up, but dies off after a minute or so).

Sounds like it could be pulse generators.

You can possibly test them with an ohmmeter.

symptoms can be as such. Bike starts, warms up then quits, after cooling down will start again until it warms.

Possible misfiring.

Although in your case it seems that the bike isnt warming up enough to create that problem.

From the manual

Fuel Pump Relay
Remove the top compartment and ignition coils.
Remove the fuel pump relay from the mounting bracket.
Turn the ignition switch and engine stop switch ON and check for continuity between the white terminal of the fuel pump relay coupler and ground. There should be no continuity.
Start the engine and let it idle. Then, check that there is continuous battery voltage between the white wire terminal of the fuel pump relay coupler and the body ground.
If the relay fails either check, replace
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

When my pulse generators went bad, the engine only cut out when it was warmed up. Took a few miles before it would cut out. When the engine cooled down it would start up again.

OK. If you assume I have less than one week working on a Gold Wing, you would be correct.

I applied voltage to the fuel pump after I got the bike started and it ran fine until my patience wore out (10 minutes). I then removed the voltage from the pump and let the bike run, checking for voltage from the relay. The relay voltage never got above 0 volts, so I think I'm correct in assuming the relay is bad.

I'm still unsure where the relay actually is. I think the top compartment tricky talked about was the tray in the top part of the false tank. I took 3 pictures and need to know how much deeper I need to go on the top part of the bike to find the ignition coils and then the relay.

[attachment=0]fuel pump relay should be located to the left of the radiator cap near the ignition coils, you'll probably see the numbers CF304 on the relay plus some other numbers

I believe the top compartment that he is talking about is actually the false tank. Getting to the coils and the relay will be a lot easier with the false tank removed.
