charging system issues/ stator issues
I read some of the posts concerning some of the tests used to check the stator, and just want to make sure that I am performing them correctly so as not to create more work than needed. When testing for voltage at the three yellow stator wires, do you disconnect the wire harness at the regulator for this test? I also noticed that the 4 wire plug that is located at the rear of the battery, at the selonoid had gotten hot and melted, which at one point had left me stranded, with no power at all to the bike, but with a little wiggle and shake, it made contact and the bike would then start again, just wondering if this could be part of the non charging issue, the burnt connection has been this way since I have owned the bike since March 08. The charging issue just happened this past summer, and haven't ridden since,( missing that part ) Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Poorboy this guy looks like he will be needing your assistance.
go to the board index and scroll down to charging problems
then your answers will be before your eyes.

I believe that you need to keep the regulator connected for that test. You can back-probe the yellow wires at the regulator connector to measure the voltage. If you are checking for continuity then you can disconnect the regulator connector and measure the yellow wires.

The fusible link and starter solenoid connector that has burnt are problematic, but usually only for starting/running issues. There is a link in the tech center that outlines how to fix the burnt wires.

plenty of posts in the electrical forums on how to check your stator, repair the connector and replace the dogbone fuses at the same time
your stator probably is good but theirs only one way to check, and that cut the wires at the connector and test the stator output

you could check at at the regulator connectors but with the condition of the connectors you might as well cut, solder and heatshrink

this gets rid of the dobone and also repairs that problem with the connector at the solenoid

if the connector at the solenoid is bad the problems may also persist at the reg connector

Just remembered, I found a sticker on the inside of the trunk lid and it shows that the stator connections were replaced back in April of 02, but that's not to say that the issue isn't in the stator wires, man, I miss driving this bike, now that is getting a little cooler.

All the solutions for all your problems are here at this site.

There you will find all sorts of suggestions on how to improve on the charging and electrical systems of this otherwise fine design.

Be accurate and precise with the modifications and you will reap miles upon miles of blissful blacktop.

I was hoping that I may find someone close to me (Richmond Va) that has done the poorboy alternator conversion to their wing, I would like to see it in person just so I have an up close and personal look at the conversion. If there is anyone that is within a few hours drive of me, I would like to come see how the conversion is set up. Thanks in advance for any info. Gary.

wouldn't say i was that close but feel free to come see my conversion, although i really think that
there are more than enough pics on the sites to guide you thru it,besides once they are in it pretty hard to see what's actually been done, this install which i'm sure you've read pretty much shows it all
