1200 starter question
Hello i have 2 1200 aspencades one is a 1986 and the other is a 1984 both of my starters will the start the bikes fine when they are cold however when they have reached normal operating temps they are very slow to turn the motor over as if they are dragging! From what i have read it sounds like tearing the starterdown and cleaning them/possibly chaging the brushes seems to correct this problem? The concern i have is i read in an article that you have to remove the engine on the 1084 model as the starter gear and the chain will fall out of place and wont line back up for reassembly is this true can anyone help me out on this issue?
Thanks Mike

You DO NOT have to pull the engine to replace the starter on any GL1200 plus you DO NOT have to worry about the chain falling inside the rear cover as the factory made provisions for the sprocket to stay in place when the starter is removed. The manual is dead wrong when it say's you must pull the engine. The only thing that has to be removed is the exhaust stud closest to the starter and the way you remove the stud is by doublenutting it and spinning it out.

Awsome thanks a million sorta sounds like one of those deals where the steeler's try to scare you into bringing your bike in for an expensive shop repair that you can easily do yourself at home!

I think somebody goofed when they were putting together the manual.
