What is the knocking when I start the engine from cold?
Will thats what these discussions are all about you never get to old to learn. I do the spin thing when my bike has been sitting for several days without being started I thought it helped, maybe not.

The check valve serves a different purpose than the bypass.It doesn't let the oil bleed back down through the filter when the engine is off.Filter stays full of oil.The filter on my 4x4 lays on it's side and if I don't use the proper filter it will knock every time you start it.Never does this with the right filter.

Check ebay. There is a guy who makes them (got the url somwhere) and he often lists them on ebay. Do a search for gl1200 parts & accessories. I think they run about $50 + shipping.
