First time using a lift...?

I just assembled my Harbor Freight atv/motorcycle lift, never used a bike lift before... was looking under the gl1200 to locate the best lift point.

It would seem the bike should be on the side stand to start with ? ... I see the pipes are lower then the frame, am unsure how is the best way to position the lift. Should I use 2x4s across the lift arms to get between the pipes on each side or ...?

I was thinking of using the overhead rafters to tie off on for lateral support, or is it enough to strap the bike to the lift...?

p.s. after initially posting this I found the following, it seems to address the issue of resting on the pipes as ok.

When I had mine on the lift to do Poorboy's conversion, I used ratcheting straps from the engine bars over the bike to the lift. One from each engine bar to the opposite side of the bike hooking on the lift.

Ahhh, just looked at your link. Quite similar to what I did.

Side stand, sometimes easier with a 1x4 under the sidestand, insert jack from the right side of the bike and place the rear lift pad under the folded center stand as near to the hinge as possible.

If you are going to remove the rear wheel be sure to place a car jack or axle stand under the front of the engine to prevent tipping, or a jack/crate under the rear wheel before dropping the front wheel.

Others have had success holding the bike by strapping the bike to the rafters instead.

Always be sure to use the safety lock on the jack in case the bottle jack gives out.
