starter kit just for 85-86-87 (gl1200) nothing for 1984!!!!

You can safely remove and reinstall the starter on a 1984 GL1200 because the factory provided a means to keep the sprocket and chain in place. I know that for certain because I have an 84 and have tried to knock the chain and sprocket out of place with the starter out but it cannot be done.

on my 84 i will do it on the center stand......not the left side stand?

Yes indeed on the 1200 there is no danger of losing the gear and chain as there is a nylon guide in the rear cover to prevent this. The 1000 and 1100's only had the issue of having to lean the bike hard over to the left to stop that gear from falling out of place.
