Master Cylinder sight glass
Just picked up an 87 Aspencade with 27k miles that has been sitting for several years. Cleaned the carbs and got it running. All the electronics are working too. Paid $400 with a new seat, running lights, repair book and some other filters and such.

To my question- I know I can use a watch sight glass to repair the clutch and brake master cylinders. Anyone that has done this know the size? I don't have a micrometer.

Thanks

I fixed mine with a dime and some of that JB Weld that looks like a tootsie-roll. Have not had a single problem with it since.

Thanks Jedmundson. I found a watch repair shop in town that will match them up for me. I was able to get the glass (plastic) out intact. If that doesn't work, a dime is pretty cheap!

I just want to get the darn thing moving before I put much more work into it.
Thanks

Good luck with the glass piece. I tried to find one but the dime went in fast and I was riding again by the end of the day. I just open the reservoir and check the fluid level when I change the oil. I figured that I would get the new glass piece all covered in epoxy trying to get it in anyways.

say its oil, fuel resistant, can be drilled for filling and bonding. didnt have a dime but a nickel fits perfect in the recess

Oz Freak you were on spot and right on time thanks a Thousand, I went right out and brought some of the Permatex metal filler and cleaned and dried the sight glass area during my lunch and applied the nickle after I scuffed it up some for bonding and let me tell you, someone must realize that there are a lot of places where coinage fits perfectly and this is one the dime was ok but the nickel did the job, I went back to work and was ready to ride that afternoon because "I wanna ride I wanna ride" ^Smile^

I used New River Cycle to repair my a couple of months back. Nice guys to deal with, had it to me quickly, and so far no problems what-so-ever. Glass fit perfectly. and its real glass not the plastic.

I have the new river sight glass in both my clutch and front brake master cylinders and they work like a charm.

I just made contact with New River (my brake glass is leaking).

Are their kits for just 1 master or are they for both?
How difficult is the change out?
Any special items I will need to do it?

I think it is for a single lens..... all you will need is some clear silicone, cant remember if some is in the kit,, I think they used to be a little cheaper at one time.

not hard to take off the old ones you can either break the old lens or try and pry off.

Their kit is for one side only, pretty easy to install. Just some clear silicone. Keep in mind that under normal circumstances the sight glass isn't under pressure. I blew one of these out changing brake pads when I compressed the the caliper without removing the M/C top. I actually have their replacements on both sides and they work great. You may need something like a small nail to get all the original material out before putting in the replacement.

I see this post/question is a bit old so here is a small update about master cylinder sight glasses.
The sun here inArizona is brutal and turned my 86's sight glasses almost to mush, so I came here looking for a solution and found :

newrivercyclesalvage.com
Phone 540-674-1354

So,today I just phone ordered 2 kits at 15.00 each. Kits are supposed to include every thing needed to install the new glass lens, plus 2 new allen head srews for the lid, and instructions.

When they arrive early next week I'll write about what they are like
to install, and if possible pictures.

{Say when are they going to invent airconditioning for bikes ?}
(Supposed to touch 110 today in the Phoenix area)
