brake master cylinder

I was not satisfied with the brakes on my 85 Interstate. My 86 has more stopping power than my 85, so I changed the back pads and bled the brakes. I had a lot of travel in the brake petal and I adjusted it as much as I could. I decided to see how much pressure I could apply to the petal and I caused a leak in the bottom of the master cylinder. Is this a normal pressure release or do I need to replace the master cylinder. It sprayed out all over my muffler. I don't think you can do anything to the bottom of the cylinder.
