Electrical problem started today
I've had something happen to me two different times this moring, and I'm hoping one
of the Goldwing guru's here can point me in the right direction to fix it.
I had ridden my bike probably close to 50 miles this morning and was sitting at a stop
light, when everything went dead. Engine died, no instruments lit, nothing.
I checked, and the 30 amp dog bone fuse on the solenoid looked broken, rather than
burnt in two.
I scrounged around the saddle bags, and found a thin key ring that I straightened, and
put in place of the fuse.
Bike started, and all was right in the world.
Rode probably 15 miles, non stop, before I got caught at another light. Same thing, everything
went dead.
I got off the bike and the plastic piece around the fuse was blazing. I snuffed out the flame
and found that the key ring had burned in two.
I thought I was SOL, when a young couple stopped, but all they could find was a paper clip.
I cut a peice off, screwed it down and headed home.
When I got home, I shut the bike off and immediately touched the paper clip. It had no heat
in it what so ever.
Is there anything that anybody can imagine that would cause this with the bike at an idle?
I have thought about everything I could and can not think what could possibly be causing this.
Thanks so much for your help and suggestions.

Mine cracked like yours did when I had the same problem. I still had the original spare dogbone and it pretty much crumbled when I tried to remove it from it's holder to use it. I don't know if it's age, heat or just that they are brittle to begin with..

Try installing an in-line 30amp blade type fuse. You'll be much happier!!

Thanks roscoe......I'll get one this weekend and see how things go.
I just thought it was odd that both times I had a problem, I was sitting, idling.
Thanks for the help.

Make sure you get a 30amp holder!! It'll have 10ga wire! I got mine from Radio Shack..

The tech center article Tricky pointed you to is the way to go. I had the exact same thing happen to me about 1000 miles from home. Fortunately, I eventually found some knowledgeable Goldwinger's in the Gold Book who figured out the problem. My dogbone fuse appeared to be OK but the other connections on that plug were going in and out. The rework in the article took care of it --- no problems with it since.

Okay, now I'm confused. I thought the stator's went bad 1000 miles from home? :-\

A couple times this season already my bike had a similar issue. Just suddenly stopped running, once going down hill compression braking and once beginning to accelerate on the highway. Both times got a good back fire pop I assume from the unburned gas. And both times after I pulled over the bike started right up and ran fine. Anyways seeing this week we head out for Niagara Falls Ontario and then Lake George NY for Americade I just did this upgrade. I got nervous breaking away the plastic on the solenoid thinking this better work or I'm screwed for vacation in five days. Started up fine, thanks for the instructions.

Just happen to be browsing EBay and found this solenoid that uses an updated ATC type fuse.
