Should I Buy it?
Greetings:
I just located a 1985 Aspencade with 39,000 Km on it.
2nd Owner is selling it certified.
He wants 3,999.00 for it.
Is that in the ballpark?

That is a good price for a certified 86 if it is in good shape.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane

Thanks, Bluewing.

I also found an '84 that needs a stator but otherwise is in nice shape.

Was thinking of just hooking up a 'poorboy' alternator and leaving the stator alone.

Anyway, I'm in the market if anyone knows of a nice Aspencade that is not a 'project'

since i'm from the us what does the term certified mean? mileage?

it seems that the 85 parts are more interchangeable with the other years so that would be my choice, but then again you didn't mention the price of the 84

you could figure that either way sometime in its future ether will need a "poorboy" mod

Hi Wingy and welcome to the forum!
That price seems reasonable if it's in good shape. Has the stator been done on the 85? I would expect you could find a better price in the US but there are inherent costs and headaches importing it to Canada.
What kind of price are they asking for the 84? With a major issue like that the price should be fairly low. I have done both the stator on my 84 and the next winter installed the Poorboy as the stator I got from RMStator died with 3500 kms on it. The Poorboy is certainly an easier install.
Keep us posted.

Thanks All for your input and your welcome to the forum.
I have a CX500 Custom that needs to (hopefully) share garage space with an Aspencade.
I like the look of the '84 -'86 style and have scoured the forums to educate myself on the GL1200 in general.
We have looked at several that were advertised as 'original' or 'good condition' that would actually be a "project".
Hopefully we can find something properly maintained and garaged for the right price.

I am passing on the '85 'cause I didn't get the right answers from the owner.
How can you own a Goldwing and NOT know what service has been done on it! ?

In Ontario, all vehicles must be inspected by a mechanic and a slip issued which goes to the people who give you your license plate.

Walter;
The '84 Aspencade has about 103,000 Kilometers has had sporadic use (maybe 1,000 Km's per year) and has been maintained.
He had the stator replaced 3,000 km's back (to the tune of $1,600).

It looks pretty as well.

The owner wanted 2,000 for it.

He took it out for final ride and noticed that it wasn't charging.

So he offered it at $1500, as is.
I figure the external alternator should fix the problem and it would be a nice ride.

I'm still hunting ...
Any wisdom out there on the 1986 SEi's ?

since i have a SEI i'll have to say i like it as much as my 87 Aspy.maybe more since i really like the travel computer and the larger stator ouput

the 86 is just a repainted 85 LTD in another color IMHO

something about the radio being twice as good as the one in my 87 also, the four speakers are really nice

Hey, the larger stator output sounds good!

Have the SEI's had similar stator lifespans as some of the other GL1200's ?
That would make a difference to me on bumping it up on my list.

The integrated fog lights and other electronic bells and whistles are cool too.

But I s'pose the more sensors and gizmos you have, the more chasing you have to do to find a bug.

Oh, yeah ... can you get OEM or aftermarket injectors for such beasts?

stator life must be better because seldom have heard of any poorboys being done, but i am sure that some have had problems

injectors can be cleaned just like on cars, but seldom have heard of them going bad, hopefully those with more experience than me with the FI's will chime in later

the cornering lights can be wired to act as driving lights and can be changed out as mine have to use actual driving or foglights with the markland adapters

True, but I was asking the owner what service was done on the bike since he owned it!

He said it was serviced at the Honda shop.

I asked " what items were serviced at the Honda shop".

He didn't know.

I did it!
We picked up a 1984 Aspencade on the weekend.

Here's a shot of it after I buckled it up on my car hauler.

I strapped it down from the upper yoke under the fairing.
Cranked it down to about 5/8 of fork travel.

Got some good hitch points on the frame behind the side covers.

Added two on the rear crash bars, just for insurance (just snugged)

The first 80 mile portion of the road home was Ontario's road from hell.. all punched out by logging trucks and frost heaves.

The front straps held the bike straight and solid all the way.

[attachment=0]Here is a shot of us unloading the Aspy with my forklift.
The seat was removed and nylon slings hooked directly to the bike frame, under the seat.
Two slings were used on the front crash bars - just for balance.
(the slings to the frame were shorter and took most of the load)
It gave me a good opportunity to check things from the underside while standing up!
