Security Cable/Lock
Any suggestions/recommendations as to a locking device for my 'Wing other than the factory steeering lock?

There is a bicycle lock that is very heavy duty called Kryptonite that might work on the spokes. It looks like a U shape with a heavy bar with lock that slides over the U and grips the teeth on the U and locks. It might work.

The other alternative is heavy aircraft cable with loops on the ends and a heavy duty padlock. Not pretty, but effective.

I have a cable lock that I use if I am leaving the Bike somewhere for any length of time. I got it at a Locksmith shop, it is made of 3/8 " stainless steel and is very tough. I think I paid $18. canadian for it. I have seen them at bike shops but I don't know what they are made of.

Thanks for the suggestion, bluewing. I'll check out a couple of locksmith shops tomorrow.

I wonder if a gun cable safety would work?

Today, I ended up buying a Kryptonite 60" cable with barrel lock for $15 (on sale) at a local bike shop. Though perhaps not the best, I'm told they are very hard to cut and the lock is almost pick proof. It's vinyl covered so shouldn't rub any paint. It also rolls up in to a small size so I can carry it easily.

It's loops through the lower frame and front wheel which seems to be the best bet.

Don't forget to remove it before you drive away otherwise it's very embarassing when you stop suddenly.

A friend of mine put a disck lock on his Yamaha and did exactly that - tried to ride off without removing it. Not a pretty sight though more embarrassing than damaging.

To make sure I don't forget, I've made up a Post-It note and stuck it on the seat.

Friends of ours attached a colored elastic cord on thier lock that they stretch over thier throttle to remind them. If they forget it is on there, the cord is plenty visible!

I use a pair of handcuffs. Either through the disk or on the fork tubes. Most people assume, if you have handcuffs, you are not a person to screw with anyway so other than a few looks and offers from kinky ladies I have never had a problem.

here's a silly question - where does one buy handcuffs?

Most any Army Surpluss store. I got case hardened Smith & Wesson for $12 in New Hampshire. Exact same as my cousin's Mass State Trooper. Tough little items. Great conversation starter - and sometimes finisher.

There's a store here in Niagara Falls where you can get some that are fur lined. Then you wouldn't have to worry about scratching the chrome. I think you have to buy in pairs though.

This topic has all the potential of leading all and sundry astray. Fur-lined at my age? I don't think so, mate. Moreover, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to visit our "adult toys" store.

Anyway, the "regular" kind are listed on eBay for about $10 plus shipping.

I have one question for you. When was the last time you heard of a Wing being stolen? The wife and I travel a fair bit by ourselves on the Wing and never have had any problem. If they want it they will take it,one way or another.I just throw the cover on every night. It seems to keep people from poking around. We usually pick our spots to stay though even though we don't book in advance.

If Id'a known it would last this long I would've taken better care of it !!!
