COOLANT ODOR GREMLIN
I have an 85 GL1200 LTD EDITION with about 70,000 kilometers on her. Every so often, after the bike has sat for a day or more, when I start it up I detect a 'coolant' smell. It only lasts for a minute or so and then disappears. I have checked the coolant level and it is OK. Once it has warmed up the Coolant temp never fluctuates out of the 'Normal' range and the engine oil is OK (no white deposits). This scenario doesn't happen EVERY time I start her up.
I have a friend with a 97 GL1500 (with approximately 80000 kilometers) who having the same symptoms.

Any ideas? :-\

its possible u might have a slight leak of the radiator cap seal which leaks down as the engine/radiator cools off
or a leaking hose which leads back to the overflow tank

hopefully the problem is a small one

My guess is that you have a small crack (near the rad) in the bottom of the hose that runs from the rad to the reservoir. After so many years that hose needs to be replaced.
