Water Pump Done
Hi All,
Finished changing out the water pump on my '84 Aspy yesterday. The old one was really worn out and allowing water to be forced past the seal into the oil sump. There was never any oil in the water, just water in the oil.
Before replacing the pump, the bike would always run at 7 bars, no matter what temperature it was outside. When I detected there was water in the oil, I shut it down and let it sit until I had time to work on it.
Now, under light load, the temperature stays between 4 and 5 bars. On the interstate at 80mph, it went to 6 bars. Once off the interstate it went back down to 5 bars. I don't see any water in the oil yet, but I plan to change it in a hundred miles after putting some marvel mystery oil in it to hopefully clean out some of the sludge that I know was in the engine.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the head gaskets are ok.

I put in a new thermostat and fan switch (OEM) and now find the bike will remain at 4 - 5 bars no matter what the outside condition or how I'm driving it... It seems my old T-stat was sticking a bit and needed to have a high temp to get it to open (6- 7 bars)... If you think yours is doing the same then consider a new T-stat... I would recommend using the OEM one as the aftermarket ones have a somewhat smaller gate opening... I realize the cost is a concern, but I figure it is the last time I'll be putting one in (last one went for 22 years before changing)...

Ed, I'll keep that in mind. During a ride to/from different plants today in 85+deg heat at 70mph it was 5 bars all the way. Also, I sat for 10 mins in traffic on Woodruff road in Greenville (what a zoo!) and it never went past 5 bars. I'm feeling good about this! The thermostat I used was a NAPA that someone on the board recommended. If I sense any issues at all I'll put a Honda on it.
