gas fumes
I ride my 85 LTD in a warm climate, (south florida) and have had troubles with vapor lock when stuck in traffic. My bike operates at 6 bars on the temp gauge routinely, but lately I have noticed that there is a strong odor of raw gas while I ride. I removed the fuel cap and the tank was very pressurized. Is this just a consequence of having the fuel tank so close to the engine? Is there a remedy? It detracts from my riding enjoyment and possibly my health.

The pressure in the tank is normal but the gas smell is not. have you noticed if your gas milage has changed. Is the bike running smooth?

CJ - do you think the fumes are coming from the tank area or are you getting them in the exahust? I think 6 bars is a little hot but maybe not in the sunny south. (mine has only been up to 5 and it was a very hot/humid day in slow traffic) My SEi will have a gas odor every now and then and I back the idle off a little and it takes care of it. I think my issue is the injectors needing a snyc so you may have a bit of the same???

You should seriously consider updating all the gas hose on your bike after all they've been in use for about 25 years and they are way past their useful life. I had a gas hose on my 84 rot and fall to pieces in my garage. I came out to the garage one day to find that the hose in question had fallen apart and dumped gasoline all over my black painted engine and where the gas leaked it took away all the paint on my engine. I decided to replace all the gas hoses on the bike and the gas smell went away. Those old and ripe hoses can actually sweat fuel away causing the smell of gas but they don't leak enough to drip until they get as bad as mine. It's cheap insurance to replace those old hoses before you have a fire.

I double checked yesterday i run at 3-4 bars I think I hit 5 once but that was in traffic in the summer.

Seeing as most of our 'Wings are 20 years old, give or take, would it be worthwhile replacing the gas caps? I understand they are pressurized so maybe that function wears out over time?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am looking for a supplier for a new gas cap as there are some small cracks in the rubber gasket. I have inspected the hoses and they look good but theres no doubt that replacements would be smart. The other thing now is that it I think the cooling system may need some attention. Its full of antifreeze and the fan operates, not sure what more to do? I think if I could make it run cooler, half my fumes problem would be cured.
