1200 Carb problems?
For the first year ever, i added STABIL to the tank in the fall, AND turned off the gas and ran it til it stalled. Usually i ride it enuf to not need to do that. This past week, with a 40 degree day comin up, i fired the bike up. Well, low speed jets on the rear cylinders must be gummed up, though it runs great over 3000RPM. I pulled the carbs today, and removed just the 2 rear carb bowls and diaphragms. All looked well, blew it out w/air, and removed the jets and cleaned w/gumout carb cleaner. reassembled and same problem. SO, did it again, with still no better running. New plugs, too, Checked coils, and they are fine, spark on all cylinders is strong. Added some Seafoam, and ran for 1/2 hour at 2k RPM. Then
flooded airbox with carb cleaner til the motor stalled, and i wil let sit til tomorrow. Got any ideas??HELP!!!

You might try synchronizing the carbs if you have not done this.

well, i didnt move the carbs off the manifold, and didnt touch those sctrews. This morning was no different. rear 2 cylinders cold. Good spark. I am ready to throw in the towel. trade her for a fishing boat. Buy a cheap lil bike to go to and from work.

It may be hard to identify the original problem with all that's been done thus far.... It's very likely that the air valve is now toast as result of the carb cleaner in the plenum... Hopefully the reed valves are not damaged as well (seated in rubber)... At this point remaval and a rebuild of the carbs is likely in order... If you don't want to do the rebuilds yourself, have a look at some of the posts for replacements... I've read of a few guys here that have purchased from the rebuilders... Maybe they can advise on the best one to go with...

well, after another tear down, and still not running well, i rechecked spark. i DO have spark, like I had said, BUT, its weak in comparison to the front 2. So, coils are out, and all resistance readings are OK. Gonna check the pulse generators next.

Doesn't one coil feed the front two cylinders and the other the back two? Maybe swap the coils and see if the problem moves to the front? Might not explain why there's only a problem at low rpm, though.

pinpointed it down to the spark plug boots. The resisters inside are all good, but 2 have no continuity at all with the resisters out. guess i gotta call the dealer tomorrow. i DID swap the coils, then wires. Hopin this will be a simple fix now. As I am furloughed 1 week a month and money is tight, i fiddled with the cap assemblys and stretched the springs, and now have resistance on all the caps. Putting it together and will try it tomorrow.

OK, now thoroughly pissed off, I am wondering if anyone has put aftermarket wires/plug boots on? Does not having the resisters in the caps give much radio interference. I built a Kaw 750 Bobber a few years back, and did the 8mm wires from Accel. Worked great. Any thoughts??

no,, it stalls right out when i do that. i have been away for a week, so today i will buy a set of solid core wires. OK< 3PM, I put new plugs and wires on, and still a weak spark on the rear cylinders. Did the tests again, and i feel the left coil is weak. Bought a used set off ebay, we'll see what happens next week. Pushed the bike in the corner to make room for the boat work. its bass season soon. :

Coils came. That DID IT!! Runs well now, seems to rev up way faster. Synched the carbs, too. They were waaaaay off. Thanks for all the replys! great website here. AL

It's such a rare thing to have the coils fail on this bike. Glad you got it working properly.
