3rd gear sputter's

hello all i got one fore ya mine sputters in 3rd gear any rpm range then i shift to 4th smooths right out . I have noticed that sometimes it does it in 2nd around 2500 to 2800 rpms sometimes but not all. really weird what do yall think that could be ?

You don't mention which model you have. The Injected models obviously have their own differences, and the Aspencades are different from the interstates. Specifically, there is a switch behind the front engine cover that tells the electronics which gear you have selected. The interstates are only concerned about neutral, fourth, and OD while the Aspencades and SEi's have electrical connections for all gears. The ignition module needs to know which speed for timing purposes but if your switch is telling the module that 3rd is fifth there could be an issue as the advance curve will be affected.
That is the only direction my brain takes me without more info since the carbs have no connection to gear selection, your description would lead me to look at ignition first, and the gear select switch is the only thing on the bike that is gear sensitive.. Can you elaborate a bit more?

sorry about that it"s an 85 aspencade with 85000 miles on it . runs good except fore that little problem which on the open road i can get through quikly my spelling is not to good but anyway city riding is another story seems 3rd gear is the one most used with traffic and reduced speed limits. how would i check the gear senser to see if its working right or not? thanks for the reply
