How to brighten up those lens?
I have some safety chrome and extra tail lights on the back of my '84 similar to http://www.chromecrazy.net/product.php?id=1844 but they're starting to look bad and get dull. The chrome part doesn't interest me all that much but I'm all for being as bright as possible. I've had unscheduled meetings with cars before and didn't like the outcome.

They have a haze on them as if they've been sandpapered. I'm guessing they aren't going to be very bright with this dull haze. The inside of the lenses look like new (as if you couldn't guess).

Anyone know how to clean these things up?

Tony

I saw a program on TV where they cleaned a cars headlight lens with toothpaste. I tried it on the wifes cage and it definately helped clear the lens. She has not said if the lights are brighter at night, but there was a noticible difference looking at it in the daytime. I dont know if it will work on the red lens, but I bet you have some around the house you can try before you spend any more money. Best of luck.

I've heard mention of the toothpaste thing before but can't remember what it was for? Painting walls perhaps?

But what the heck, can't hurt to try. Grabbed the ol'Crest and a paper towel and started rubbing. Looked a little better after washing off. Thought I'd better check against one of the other lens.

Holy smokes! Guess it really works. This is after 5 minutes of effort. Not the greatest pic in the world but you can see the difference.

Thanks Pappy!!

I have the same lenses on my light bar and they have been there since 1986, mine are still shiny, all I can add is that I use plexus on the lenses.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Glad to help out Tony, polish a bit more and keep plexus on them and you should be good for a long time. I have heard you can wet sand with 1000 grit paper and then polish like you do clearcoat, never tried that because my buffer dont have enough rear end. Guess I can add that to my list of tools I must have.

I worked for a wrecker service at one time, I drove one of those 4 axle big rig wreckers.

I had a lot of spare time here and there, the light bar on the top was foggy looking, windex wouldent even touch it.

I took out the ol rubbing compound and began working on the lens, about an hour later, it looked as good as new.

I have had fantastic luck with a product called WENOL red, it is listed as a metal polish, but I bought some at a hod rod show, $14.00 for a tube like a large toothpaste tube.
The headlight lens on my explorer were faded and yellow. 5 mins. per headlight and they look NEW Big Grin
I have used it all over the Goldwing to clean and brighten chrome, I even polished the entire windshield, it looks new, I like this stuff.

Tooth paste is a great rubbing compound and smells minty fresh when you done. I've been using it on lenses for years. Its cheep and most people always have it around.

Ok, I have the same light bars on my 84 Aspy, where can I get replacement lenses for them. I have spent countless hours "searching" the WWW and have come up empty. Even called a couple of junk yards to see if the had any casualties laying around, but no luck.

I cleaned up some plastic last weekend with Brasso--I was quite surprised--of course it would depend on how bad the plastic is scarred up
