broken wires to fuel pump, 1986 SE-i
Instead of copying everything here, I'll put a link to my problem.
Thanks in advance

I don't own an ltd/sei, but from the wiring schematic, this should be a relatively easy fix.
The red arrow points to the first connector off the fuel pump. Do you see this connector? I don't know how long the chord is.
If you don't see this connector, check back closer to the main harness and try to locate it. According to the schematic, it should be "banded" with yellow tape. A two pin connector with a brown and a green wire.
Honda spliced the power wire with the "air valve". (Blue circle) Check for power on that brown wire at the air valve (engine will have to cranking, I believe). If you have power there, you can always tap into that wire for your fuel pump power source (just like honda did).
Green wire is always ground.
This looks relatively safe, since all the fuel pump control features seem to be before the large connector shown by the green arrow.

Thanks, I got as far as the wiring diagram, guess I'll have to dig and find
out what an air valve is - but I can't find where these wires pulled out from,
may have to uncover the main harness, trying to avoid doing that.

Welcome to the site Tookie!! Sorry it took me all day but I had problems with the kitchen faucet!! On my Ltd Ed the 2 wires you're looking for are green and brown and come out of the main wireing harness on the right side of the bike. Here's 2 pic's:
