Removing Water Pump from Transmission Cover
|
|
|||
I'm trying to remove the water pump from the transmission cover and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I suspect that the preferred way is to use a large socket sized to line up on the edge of what appears to be a bearing or oil seal and tap it with a mallet until the water pump falls out the front side of the transmission cover. Is this correct?
I soaked the pump in liquid wrench over two nights and it still doesn't budge. Thanks in advance for the help. Billy |

I am bumping this up for Billy. I didn't read his post very well (again) and misunderstood his problem. So I deleted my attempts to help, but I am hoping someone else will be able to help.

Kevin~
I read your post before you deleted it. Either you got it right the first time, or I can't read either. Billy~ If you have the transmission cover off, you will find three screws (bolts) on the back side that hold the water pump assy to the housing. Remove the screws and push (tap, smack, whatever) the water pump out the rear. It is a tight fit, but it should come. Hopefully you're replacing the whole water pump? If so, do you have the new one yet? Should give you a pretty good idea how it's held in. NOTE: The above procedure is incorrect and should not be attempted as you will severely damage the transmission cover and water pump since the water pump must come out the front of the transmission cover.- Admin |

GL,
Thanks for responding. I guess I should have left well enough alone! So for the sake of others who may be wondering, here are the pics I had deleted. They show how the water pump is supposed to be removed from the cover. [attachment=1] [attachment=0] |

kwatts,
Thanks, for the long bolt trick. I browsed your post earlier but I guess you had taken the pics down cause they weren't there but the text part of the post was ... at least I think that was your post. Anyway this trick will help. My repair manual (Clymers) doesn't show this it just says to remove it from the cover as if it was ready to fall out on its own. Thanks So Much Billy |

Thanks everybody for your assistance. The long screws in the rear of the transmission cover did the trick. The pump was really in there very tight. I never would have been able to remove that pump any other way without destroying the transmission cover.
Thanks EverSoMuch Billy |

Glad it worked out for you. When I replaced mine I must have lucked out because I didn't have to use the long screws...but I remembered seeing it in the Haynes manual and thought it might work.
