Greetings from a new member
Hello fellow GL1200 riders, just joined this site today and wanted to say hi from the Blue Springs Missouri area. I ride a 85 GL1200 newly painted blue Interstate. My daughter name her "Blue Venom" and she runs pretty good. However I do have so oil leakage on both the right and left side landing on the parking area towards the from the of the engine area. I am thinking shifter shaft seal on the left and valve cover gasket on the right. How hard is it to change the shifter shaft seal, any one care to give some advice. Anyway happy to be hear and love the site.

Hello airman, welcome to the site.

The shifter seal is pretty easy....has been a few years but I'll give it a shot. What I remember  is that all you do is take the shifter lever off, pry the old seal out with an awl of something pointy, and then carefully tap the new seal in. Mine was dripping a few drops everywhere I went, it sure was nice to get that fixed. About a 20 minute job if I remember correctly. Make sure you get the shifter lined up correctly when you put it back on, if it's off a notch it will feel weird......

Never did the valve cover gaskets yet......mine has some "blow by" that I keep wiped off, but nothing liquid as of yet.

Good luck Big Grin

Welcome aboard, airman77. Neither job is too difficult and could be done in less than an hour, I'd think.

greetings from sunny FLA 8)

I don't know about the shifter shaft, but the right side valve cover is far easier than the left, for some reason the crash guard comes completely off without too much drama on the right.

probably an hour tops, and that's taking a smoke break

torque for the cover bolts is 9 foot pounds, and use some anti-sieze just for insurance
