GL1200I (1985) Head Removal Question
I'm currently tearing down to send my heads out for a valve job after locating what looked like a beginning head gasket leak. On the top of each head are the two intakes attached to the two carbureators. There is also a pipe that appears to not be part of the carb system and is a crimped sealed pipe ... like you would see on a high pressure gas line. Two bolts hold this pipe in place on the head though removing them does'nt help to move them away from the head.

The $64 question is: Having removed the two screws holding this pipe in place ... can I remove the head without damaging this pipe since it cannot be lifted away from the other words will the head slide outward away from this pipe so I can take the head off without further dismemberment of my bike and without the risk of damaging that pipe? I've read two GL1200 repair manuals (Clymer and Haynes) and neither says that this pipe must be removed to remove the head ... in fact only the Clymer manual even shows it in a diagram and names it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

They are the water pipes.
You can slide the head sideways, they are a slide fit over O rings at each end. The O rings will need to be replaced and if the joint is removed a gasket is required.
It might be easier to have the joint removed for easy assembly later on. Use plenty of vaseline on the O rings on assy or you may pinch them.

The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.
