Horn Question

Ok, I've been wanting some louder honkers on my wing. I was thinking of an air horn setup, but that seamed to be a bit obnoxious? I've decided on an old Buick horn setup, for now:o) I have the horns and they are much louder than my stock horns. My question is, can I wire them directly to the bike in place of the old tooters? Or should I run them with a relay? I don't know if there is already a relay, So this might be a silly question? But I still had to ask:o)
Thanks for your help, Wes |

Hi Wes; I hooked a pair or air horns to the same wires as the stock horns without any problems so far, I forget how many years ago but it's been few. Should not be a problem I wouldn't think. Good luck. p.s. I did disconnect the and remove the stock horns.

The air horns I purchased advised a 30 amp relay, that compressor takes a lot of juice.
You will probably find the horns your putting on just might not cut the mustard wired up to the stock horn wires, on the other hand they may work fine but I would add a relay fused directly from the battery to power the horns and use the light green horn wire to control the relay.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

I'd agree with Tricky. I added aftermarket highway horns to mine and went with his suggestion of a fuse and relay and they work great. For the little extra time and small amount of money,it's better to be safe than sorry later.

Thanks for the replies:o) I'll use a relay to power the horns just to be safe. I'll take a couple of pictures of the installation.
Ride safe, Wes |
