New member in Eastern NC
Hey everyone. My name is Kevin and I live in eastern NC. At time of this posting, I am almost a Goldwing owner. I am going Thursday to pick up my new to me 1985 LTD. The man that owns it wants a cruiser and I happen to have a cruiser and want a Goldwing, so we are going to make a trade. Some people may think I am crazy for trading my 99 V-Star 1100 custom for a Goldwing LTD. What do you experts think? According to the current owner of the LTD, it is in good condition, everything works as it should, cosmetically sound with 36XXX miles. Never owning a Goldwing, I am basing this confidence on the reputation that it has. Anyway, you folks here are the experts, What do you think? Thanks for your site and input.

Welcome Kevin, you are getting one of the best bikes ever made. It is hard to say about your deal without knowing more about both of the bikes, An 1100 V Star is a nice bike for sure. I have an 86 Aspencade and I wouldn't trade it for a 99 V Star because I love my wing too much and its reputation of being a great holds true, you will soon find this out. Enjoy your new bike.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane

Hello Kevin, the LTD is a mighty fine ride, that would be the 1200 I would want if I was to get rid of my 1500. I am 40 miles west of Charlotte, glad to have another neighbor here.

Hey Kevin,
I also have an LTD. It is my first wing and I think it is great. Mine has almost 84,000 miles of which I have driven it about 15,000. Get to know the bike and get yourself the service manual because you may not be able to find anyone to work on it (or any 10+ year old ride). When you get ready for some mountain scenery give me a shout and maybe we can get together. BTW, I have both the Honda manual and the Clymer so if you need anything, let me know.

Welcome from southwest Ohio!

Hey everyone,,,,,,,if you've never ridden in the Carolina's, you're missing some beautiful roads. Seems like we're hearing from those states more and more,,,,do I sense a gathering in the future??? Big Grin

Welcome to the board Kevin! You'll find the Wing an entirely different animal than the Star. The Wings are a great bike but remember you are getting into a 23 y/o bike. It won't be without issues. A lot of us have gotten bikes from po's who said the machines were in great shape only to find a number of issues that had to be dealt with. Be sure to check it over as best as you can.
Good luck with the new bike and again, welcome to the fraternity!

Thanks for your input, and I am looking forward to other opinions. I know that the GL1200 is a totally different animal from the vstar, but I think it fits my needs and riding style better. My last bike was a 1980 CB750C. (900 cams, new clutch and springs, hondaline hard luggage) I hated to get rid of it but the charging system left me on the side of the road three times. So I was concerned about reliability. I know the older bikes are not without problems, but it is a goldwing. According to PO the charging system has been gone thru and other connectors replaced/redone, but time will tell. It seems to me from reading and poking around different goldwing sites the electrical stuff is the weakest part. Mechanical and driveline on these bikes seem to be pretty bulletproof. (valve seals excluded). I try to do my own wrenching so I am sure that I will be coming to you guys and gals for help and instruction. Thanks again for the replies and I look forward to sharing info.

Thanks for the welcome. I think I have some electrical gremlins that I will be working through. But so far think it will be well worth it. Thanks
