Repaint, etc. 84 Aspencade
Just got the bike back on the road today after two long weekends of work. Installed new tires. Changed out the rear diff for a 1500 diff, wheel and brake. Checked the swingarm bearings and re-lubed. Installed iridium plugs. And painted it bright yellow. The previous color was not that bad, just seemed 'invisible' on the road. No emblems on it yet, thinking about buying new ones that won't look so bad against the new paint.

Not sure I like the way the brake hose is routed against the shock cover. Will the new braided hose not fit behind the shock with the mounting plate or have you not got the mounting plate?

Sure is bright though them cagers don't seem to care what colour the bike is.

Looks good
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

I have the mounting plate off the 1200, but I didn't try it. Don't have anything else off the 1500. I'll look at the pictures of how others have done that. Thanks.

Nice job, you should be seen better now. I just put a 1500 final drive in my bike, it works very good.

Good point Angela. The yellow NM plate blends in nicely.

Note the 150/80 B16 Avon tire is exactly the same height as the Dunlop 15" tire that was on it, so my ride height stayed the same. And no rubbing problem with two up.

No I don't think so Angels, the 1500 final drive seems the same size. The only thing I had to do is drill the 4 mount holes in the swing arm a bit bigger because the mount bolts on the 1500 final drive are bigger.

Thought I would update my success or lack thereof on my conversion to a 1500 rear diff. When I installed it back in August I drilled out the 4 holes in the swing arm to 7/16" which is 1/32" larger than some have reported here in their conversions. I had a little trouble getting the axle to line up. I rotated the rear diff clockwise from the rear as far as it would go and the rear wheel/caliper mount etc on the left side still had to be pushed up almost 1/4" in order to get the axle in. I did not like it, but I was afraid to drill the 4 holes out any larger because there is just not that much metal around the holes.

Well, I have been having problems the last month. Shimmery metal in the rear diff oil, and leaking seal dripping gear oil on the rear wheel. The diff only had 35k miles on it, so I decided it was probably my installation that was the issue. I bought another 1500 rear end and checked it, and it would not align properly either. I took the rear end off my 85 project bike and it fit perfectly. No alignment problems, axle slid through very nicely without pushing on anything.

So I decided to drill the holes out in the swing arm to 9/16". There is very little steel left around the holes but I think it will be OK. I put a flat washer on before the nuts to sorta spread the load out. And now I can rotate the 1500 diff clockwise far enough that the axle goes in with ease. Solved the alignment problem.
