Carbs poping at around 2500 rpms
Hi all

I'm new to goldwing's I just purchased a 1985 GL 1200 I with 20,000 miles on it. The carbs keep poping at about 2500 rpms or running at about 25 to 35 mph, above these sppeds it smooths out and seems to run fine. The mechanic suggested I try running carb cleaner through it. That since it has such low milage that the bike was not run much. If it did not get any better that we rebuild the carbs in the fall when he is not so busy. Does this sound resonable. I have run carb cleaner and Higher octane fuel about 3 tank fulls and 600 miles, so far not much change.
Any suggestions.

Sounds like the low speed jets are plugged up. You may need to take the carbs apart to clean them but one thing that I have seen work occasionally is to pull the air filter and with the engine running at high RPM you completely and quickly block off airflow with a clean towel at the intake manifold opening. This causes fuel to be drawn through the jets rapidly which can sometimes dislodge the blockage if you're really lucky. It's a cheap fix if it works. Bear in mind though that it could potentially foul out the spark plugs so pull the towel off before the engine stalls.
