timing belts changed
With all the advice that I've found on this site, and my honda manual on the table I jumped on the timing belts. Just as all of you have said, about 3 1/2 hours later it was back together and running. Again I thank all those that give the advice that is so helpful to us that are new to these bigger bikes.

Yup, piece of cake. It actually takes about 1/2 hour to change the belts. The other 3 hours is dissasembly and re-assembly of everything that's in the way.

I need to do mine, but am scared to death of screwing something up. I'll probably end up paying $300.00 for the robbers to do a $20.00 part replacement.

I can't really say I was really excited about working with something new that could screw up the bike so bad, but the difference between $30 for the two belts compared to $60 each at the honda dealer, and then $11 for new anti-freeze was easier on my pocket that what they would charge.
Everything that could surprise me was explained to the letter so even though I talked to the big biker in the sky when I hit the starter if felt sure it would start up right. Between this site and Steve Saunder's site you can find enough info & photos to guide you thru it. I did make sure that after it was back together, with the plugs out I turned it over by hand to make sure nothing was out of wack and going to touch together. (pistons & valves.)

That's really the best thing to do when you got it together and before you start it. I recommend for everyone doing a belt change to do that!

Its not that hard of a job. I did mine also. It was scary but not hard.

If you lived around here I would offer you a hand. It's kinda scary when you get the right belt off because it's going to roll back, but it's no problem. I ended up rolling mine forward of the mark to get the belt lined up right when I got that belt on. Really simple, just makes you sweet a bit.

If you feel you are not up to it don't take it on by yourself yet. Have a shop do it, and then when the job comes up again you'll probably have enough experiance to feel some comftorble with this later.

Planning on this and am wondering if you need too remove the radiator to do it. Have heard you need not remove it

You don't HAVE to remove it, but I don't even think of doing that job with the radiator in place. It's not much more work to pull the radiator out, less then leaving it in and working around it. Might as well freshen up the anti-freeze while you are at it.

If you have never changed the belts yourself before, I would take the radiator off just to have more working room. It is very tight without removing it.

I've done several belt changes and still prefer to do the job after removing the radiator. It just gives more room to work and you have to drain the coolant anyway so it's not much more bother. You will also be much better able to see what you're doing, very important for the first time. The only 'Wing that doesn't need the radiator removed is the 1500. One thing about a belt change, it's not something you'd ever do alongside the road, if it breaks you'll be doing a lot more work anyway. AND ALWAYS TURN THE ENGINE OVER AT LEAST TWO FULL TURNS BY HAND once the new belts are on. Remember it takes two full turns of the crankshaft to get one full turn of the cam pulleys.

One thing I always recomend to anyone changing belts is to line up all the marks before you take anything apart. Check, double check and triple check to be sure that all the marks align correctly before disassembly. It just makes the job so much easier and it will let you know if someone else had the marks in the correct locations.

Also after installation turn the engine over by hand several times, of course easier to do by removing the spark plugs.

Fellas The Clymer goes into quite abit of what appears to alot of detail--Apart from marking everything before removing the belts, is it similar to memoving the serpentine belt on a car, back off the tensioners ,remove and replace the belts, tighten up the tensioners and re-assemble? Or is there a lot more to it than that ? Advise please Thanks John D. Big Grin
