charging system connectors
My newly purchased 86 wing is currently working fine and I was told it had a new stator installed a year ago but the bike only had 17k miles on it. On ebay there is an 86 that is being sold and the owner states he removed the connectors to prevent the stator heat buildup issues that cause failure. should I have this done and what is he referring to removing the connectors. You advice is appreciated. Thanks Les BTW with no receipt to prove it, how would I know if the stator truly has been replaced?

Hello capt,

The connector that is usually credited for causing all the problems is located to the left of the battery, it is a large white plug with 3 yellow wires on top and bottom. This is the outgoing AC voltage from the stator to the regulator, this plug usually gets hot due to corroded connectors and will cause some major problems. Look to see if the plug is still there or if it has been taken out and the wires soldered together. Soldering the wires together is the preferred method of repair. Be sure to get into good clean wire if your soldering and either seal the connections with shrink tubing or good electrical tape.

Is everyone in agreement that I should have those connections soldered to prevent problems in the future?

Yes, you need to remove that connector and solder those wires. I ended up having to do that to mine in front of a NAPA store while out on a ride. Not the best situation.

Also as far as the new stator goes, as long as it's working properly it doesn't matter how old it is. Then when it quits, you can put a poorboy alternator on it and never have to worry about it again.

If you never, ever let the battery run down you can leave the connector unsoldered as long as the mechanical connection is solid and tight but the first time you run the battery flat it will impose a great load on that connection and will, most often, weaken it to the point that the resistance overcomes the connection, shorts out then causes the stator to fail.

That's a big gamble on an expensive repair job so if you're not a gambler cut the white connector out and join the three yellow wires together with solder and cover up the connection with shrink tube to make a nice neat job of it.

This will not garantee that the stator will never fail but it gets you one step closer to better reliability.

If you want the ultimate in reliability go for the auto alternator conversion and then you can almost forget about charging system breakdowns and if it does happen then it's just a minor job to fix the problem.

Thanks for all the info. I am having those connections fixed tomorrow at a local shop. Lloyd I'm not sure how far it is from Mckinney to cleveland,Tx but I may have to bribe, pay you to install that kit for me as nobody around here wants to touch that project. I agree in the long run thats the best thing to do. Les

When I bought mine on eBay 14 months ago, I rode a bus to Denton and rode my baby home. So I know about where you're located.

According to MS Streets and Trips, McKinney is just north of Dallas and almost due east of Denton and this is about a 4 and 1/2 to 5 hour drive from Cleveland. Cleveland is only 47 miles northeast of Minute Maid Stadium which is down town Houston.

For now go ahead and replace the connector and solder the wires and when the stator goes out we'll work out something on installing the poorboy kit then. Meanwhile... enjoy your new ride... and I look forward to meeting you sometime on some highway between here and there.

Hey Poorboy, how's things going with the clean up and move?

It's nice to see that you finally have some time to come out here and post. You were missed.

Hi Vic,
I haven't even gotten a good start on sorting though all the junk I have gathered in 21 years in this building. I'm still trying to make up my mind where I want to live. The alternator kits have been keeping me fairly busy. It has been kind of cold here, that slows me down a lot(got a knee that realy don't like cold).

Ah Man... I would have enjoyed that. Sad

Are you moving? Where to? Just the shop or everything? :?

Hi Lloyd,

Have to move every thing. Sold my shop, and seeing I lived in an apartment in the shop I have to find a new place for every thing. I bought a motor home(thats why I was in Texas). My plan is to travel a bunch the next couple of years in the motor home. I still have to get rid of a lot of things or find some place to put them.
