Kevin, I answered your e-mail this morning at 7:45 cst. I don't know when you sent it but my e-mail was down for about 12 hours. I'm answer all e-mails pretty quick & I check my e-mail 3-4 times every day. I have gotten a couple of virus, so if there is no subject (I get a lot of them)I usually do not open them. Poorboy

kevinpager, just a suggestion, read up on all the little things you can do while you have the alt conversion in progress. IE: timing belts, thermostat, thermo-fan switch, and a switch to override the thermo-fan switch turning on the fan.

I have a quick question or two on the poorboy install. 1st, do I need to buy new gaskets for the timing belt covers? And what prevents water from getting into the the hole that I will be cutting in the timing belt covers or should I not worry about that?

No need to buy new seals, they are more for dust & to keep the covers from rattling. If you are in water deep enough to get into the timing area you have other trouble.LOL Poorboy

You may not "need" new timing cover gaskets, however, because you'll have to trim the gaskets it's a good idea to use a new set. Originally one of the timing gaskets goes between the two covers making a seal. Now you're going to have a hole there where the pulley bolts to the crank and will need to trim accordingly. I've driven in hard rain and haven't had any issues with moisture. It's a small hole and you'll have a spinning pulley in front of it.

I appreciate the reply. I just want to make sure I have all my basis covered. I was just thinking, has anyone put like a bristle brush or anything around the pulley shaft. At this point I'm not concerned about it just curious.

I once installed a Lexan baffle behind the pulley thinking that it would keep water out but I discovered that it just wasn't necessary after performing a number of conversions on GL1200's. In case you didn't know the timing belt covers have vent holes from the factory to help eliminate condensation buildup.

I was thinking about adding some drain holes if there weren't any. I'm feeling confident about the install now and it looks like I'll be helping a friend with his 1100 as well. He's been riding around for two years now without a charging system relying strictly on a trickle charger and keeping his headlight off.

I'll let you guy's know how the install goes and post some pics of the process as well.

There are 2 vent holes on top and 2 on the bottom.
