NOISE FILTER
Hey Gents...I just aquired an 87' Aspencade w/out doing my homework, but thru classes like this one am I being school'd about that years.......uhhmmm ELECTRICAL ISSUES!
So first thing I do is buy a Helms manual, It says pop off the left side cover to check the pulse gen, there is only one plug there (not two), and the one that is there is,,,,,,,,MELTED!!! Next lil lesson I learn is any alternator work starts by removing the engine.Trouble shooting on, I do a battery leakage test,,, where I disconnect the - cable off the battery & check between it and the - post,,, any reading indicates a leak,,,Im reading 10 to 11.5 vdc?? Trouble shooting on,Regulator/rectifier (seems o.k.?) depending on the results from the Helms manual,,, the written description of the test is OPPOSITE to the schematic as far as the diodes go.Trouble shooting on. Next the manual says, (see attachment #1),,,bla,bla,bla,,,replace noise filter??and it evan shows a drawing where it is,,but what I see is the ignition control unit?.I went to a honda dealer and talked to so called mechanic,,,he said " 87 a bad year for that bike" (STRIKE ONE), "hope you didnt pay alot for it"(STRIKE TWO), "are you sure youre testing it correctly"(STRIKE THREE!!). I went to a goldwing speacialty shop and the guy wasnt copping to noise filter and didnt seem to concerned about the battery leakage results. So now that i have the entire wire harness exposed, I simply taped & dielectriced<<<?? everything, and soldierd the three yellow alternator wires,,,,,,everything is better than ever,,,but I still would like any input about this NOISE FILTER!!,,,,,Thanks peeps,,,Clipper

Me thinks your helms manual was for the 84 year model thats where the pulse Gen connector is in that years.

85 + the connector is under the false tank on the left side.

Don't know anything about a noise filter, nothing in the Honda manual.

Helms manual was 84-87' and these pics are out of a goldwing manual.
All for not, I rode it to work today, been fine for about one week, stopped for gas, battery drained, suddenly not charging,,,and,,,,,,,yellow wires from alternator show continuity between them , which is good,, but also continuity to ground    Confusedhock:

Maybe a goldwing manual but is it the Genuine Honda Manual.
I have the genuine Honda manual covering years 84-85 it shows nothing about a filter, maybe it is something on 86 and 87 years. I shall have an 86 Aspy here on Saturday, I will look in that area.

If you have continuity to ground it means there is a short there somewhere.
You can test for output on the yellow wires but me thinks it wont be long before it finally dies.

What is that thing that it is pointing at on the left side of the handlebars.

......

I was digging around and found this on EBAY:
here's one on Ebay it says it's off an 86 but I have never seen one

The noise filter is located just aft of the voltage regulator. It uses a subharness between the main harness and the voltage regulator. The subharness uses the same color codes as you would see on the regulator plug. Three yellows, two reds, two greens, etc. There is enough harness to bypass the noise filter and go from the main harness directly to the regulator. But if you've measured the legs to ground and gotten continuity, I don't think the filter is your problem. Sad
