85 Aspy Radio going crazy
|
|
|||
Ok, just picked up this 85 aspy:
As you can see it has been loaded out, and I have everything working but the radio. The good: The radio turns on and I can hear a station when the bike is turned to Acc. The Bad: 1. Bike on or off - when I tune a loud BRZZZT sound comes out of the speakers, basically what I would assume to be full volume. 2. The radio has horrible static when running. 3. The static builds as the RPMs increase. The strange: When I turn on one of the accessory lights, the static goes down (not away, just down a little bit). However, there is a bzzt radio bzzt radio bzzt going on that is enough to make you want to hurt things. I know that wasn't very descriptive, and I have no idea where to start on this thing. All the accessories work no problem, so I am not certain it has to do with wiring related to them or not. I did not wire the bike, I bought it this way. Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would do before you could even start to fathom out any problems would be to disconnect ALL the accessories.
Then try the radio if it still making noises but you can hear it fine when the engine is stopped may be we can trace the problem. Nice looking bike. I see it has two antennas does it have a CB? or is one just for show.

Yes there is a CB (Maxon MCB-10A) as well.
Ok, I just went out and unplugged the Fuse for the accessories (no more accessories this way right?). Radio does the same thing.

Are these accessories wired directly to the battery?
Your CB is not the Panasonic Type III so depending on how it is wired into the system could be a problem. Do you know if the CB is working? and if so does it come over the speakers. This bike is new to you dont assume everything is wired up correctly, something is wrong obviously.

Oh trust me, I don't believe or assume it is wired correctly, as I have already "repaired" some of the wiring connections. As far as I can tell, everything is based off of the junction blocks for accessories. This is completely unscientific, but when I remove the fuse from the accessories they all stop working and it appears that all the colored wires (yes the original owner used many different colors of wire) that run to the accessories are wired to that point.
As for the CB, not sure if it comes thru the stereo or not. It turns on, but I haven't really heard traffic across it. But then again, I haven't tested it with the stereo on either as it drives me wonkers. I'll have to do that tonight when I get home.

If this bike has the stock alternator, there will not be enough current produced to run many accessories anyway.
As far as the radio is concerned these diagrams will show you what is on the Aspencade when it is (stock), (with CB) and the layout of the complete system on the bike. Basic accessories. Accessories with CB Layout on the bike If that aftermarket CB is wired into the system it could cause all kinds of problems especially if it isn't designed for the system. I see that the Maxon you have is a hand held cb, is that wired into the speakers somehow?

I'll test tonight to see if the CB is wired in or not. Work firewall is blocking your img links, so I will review those tonight as well. Updated profile too

Ok, CB is apparently is NOT hooked into the stereo at all. If I key the cb mike the radio does not change/quiet or anything else.
Hmm, looking over the diagrams now, it appears there are a lot of places that things could be wrong. How do I get to the back of the stereo itself to make sure there is nothing loose there? I know how to pull the radio out, but I mean behind that.

You dont need to get to the back, pull out the radio, and look at the back of the radio, gently close the contacts, make sure they are clean, then smear a little di-electric grease on them, the bike can get subject moisture and it will help to keep the moisture away. I tend to check these contacts yearly as the radio is subject to a lot of bouncing even inside the metal cage.
See if that helps, there are lots of other places to check but as you try each thing keep checking the radio.

Since I had to find the "not starting" resolution yesterday, I had the top of the bike all apart. My static/rpm buzz issue was related I believe to the coil lead wire not being completely connected. I also found that an "accessory" was grounding against the tone/auto vol box in the left fairing creating radio problems.
With that all fixed, now I just have the brrrrpzt sound when I try to change the station with the seek/find control on the bars.

More info. I took a decent about 100 mile loop tonight. The static still is there at higher RPMs and it appears to be related to the auto volume/tone control bit on the stereo. Can that be taken out of the loop by simply unplugging it? Or can it go bad? It appears that no matter where I put the auto volume, it goes up/down the same amount based on RPMs. Make sense to anyone?
