LCD dark, no power

87 Aspencade battery went bad. Bought new one, charged, installed - no LCD power but the clock works. When I turn the ignition switch on, the clock goes dark, turn the ignition swith off, the clock lights up. I checked the 30 amp fuse - ok. Fog lights which are wired directly to the battery light up bright. Manual says to check the 7.5 amp fuse in left fairing pocket, can't find one...only a 3.0 amp fuse and it's good. I'm about to pay a hefty tow truck bill to get the bike to a shop - any ideas please?
Thank you. |

Does anything else work like turn signals, radio, headlight, etc.

You checked the 3 amp fuse (it is OK) did you check if you were getting voltage to the 3 amp fuse.
The red wire from the battery powers this fuse without interruption to provide memory for the radio. If you have voltage there, then you have voltage going to the ignition switch also. If not I would start digging around the that little black box where the 30 amp fuse is located.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

He must have had it towed to the shop to have the fuse replaced.

Ok, it's a little old, but here is what I found, I am fixing the same problem on an '86 1200a.
The wiring on the solenoid switch, just to the right of the battery was melted on my bike. I was able to get a temp fix by seperating the wires with non conductive materials to get my bike home. Chances are good there is a short on or around there. When you change the battery, you have to disconnect it and moving 20+ year old wiring can sometimes do bad things. If you still have a problem, make sure to check there... |
