I understand the 84 starter is unique to that year model. I see them on ebay and 84 is listed by itself and the others are all together. I would bet Tricky posts a pic of a chart telling us all the truth.

Starter motor Part number 84 31200-mg9-004
Starter moter part number 85,86,87 31200-mg9-406

There is a difference. This was for the model Aspencade presumably the Interstate models are the same.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Another place to check the numbers would be on Bike Bandit. '84 Standard vs. Interstate vs. Aspy.

OK here goes a question...

On the frame plate it says 1984.
the tittle says 1985?

and a funny fact is that the engine seems to be 85 or later because the when i was trying to find the pulse generators on the back of the engine, but never found them, they were on the front under the timing belt covers o.o

How im going to know what starter to purchase in the future when my starters fails??

I think I would go with rebuilding the original instead of buying another one. I would think the brushes are the same for all of them.

If the starter cable is closer to the front of the bike it's an 84, if the starter cable is closer to the back of the bike it's an 85.
