Possibile problem with fuel pump??
Ok Guys I may have a problem I am hoping I can get some help with. I have only had my bike for a couple weeks now and I just love it. However, yesterday the fuel pump started “clicking” I had not heard it do this until yesterday, I also noticed that on the low end 1st and 2nd with the RPM’s under 1750-1800 it acts like it is starving for fuel and missing. It will idle just fine at 1020 with out any hesitation and no missing.

When the RPM’s get above 1800 everything smoothes out however the “clicking in the fuel pump also becomes much faster. It is a noticeable click that I can hear even at 55MPH and around 3000+ RPM

I read on here in one of posts that the fuel pump is supposed to click however up until yesterday I never heard it and she ran wonderful. I have not done the fuel pump test. The PO said that they had replaced the fuel pump but did not say if it was used or how long ago. I have just had the carbs rebuilt and synced as well as a new fuel filter and all new fuel lines. The fuel filter still looks clean (it is one of the plastic ones) No obvious signs of leaking anywhere. Is it safe to say that I should be looking for a new fuel pump or am I being paranoid and just need to do the fuel pump test first? Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can you see through the filter to see if there are any bubbles in it when running. If so then you could be sucking air somewhere before the pump causing it to be overworked and not building enough pressure to shut it off. These pumps don't run all the time the bike is running..This will not necessarily show up as a leak because it could be in the tank.If there is no air bubbles in the filter then I would check to see if the outer end of the pump seems to be overly hot.If it is then I would say that the points in the pump are in bad shape. This is just something I've found out from my own experience so take it for what it's worth. After disassembling my old pump and seeing how it was built I'm kind of surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

P.S.I never heard mine run until the bike actually died on the road and you couldn't hold your hand on the end of the pump.

If Id'a known it would last this long I would've taken better care of it !!!

Thanks for the ideas to check. I have checked the fuel filter and there does not seem to be any bubbles in it. however it is never full either. Seems to never get more than half full. I have turned the valve off at the tank and let the filter drain down and opened it up to let the fuel back in and it will still only fill to about half. Is that normal?

The fuel pump will not get to hot to touch, it is warm but never hot as of yet.

This is my first bike since I was a teenager so sorry if these are very basic and simple questions.

I did change the engine oil and gear oil today so now I have a known time line to work from.

Thanks again.
