Hi viterp, This is what the manual calls for.

NGK DRP8EA-9 for normal climate.
NGK DPR7EA-9 for cold climate.
NGK DPR9EA-9 for extended high speed

I have the normal in mine and they seems to work fine for me.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane

I use the standard NGK plugs (as per the manual) and find them quite satisfactory. There has been some talk about the Iridium DPR8EIX-9 performing well. Not sure if they will enable your wing to achieve "Warp Speed" but they will probably lighten your wallet a little more. Regular plugs, regular gas and I get all the speed I can handle. Now Vic, on the other hand...........

I like the Irirdium plugs because they give a little better starting, a little better performance and a little better gas mileage all documented by me over the course of 5 years of comparison to the standard NGK plugs but they do cost a lot more but they might outlast the bike.

Do you follow the specified replacement time in your handbook?

Maybe thats why your fuel economy is a little low?

I would think that the original manual might be incorrect these days Tricky as back in those days the spark plugs had to deal with lead fouling. Today, with unleaded gasoline, that is no longer the case so spark plugs last considerably longer and irridium spark plugs can conceivably last the life of the bike.

We went through that before Vic unleaded gas came out before this manual was printed.

When ever did your older car manufacturer recommend plug changes at such a low mileage because of lead contamination.

"When Unleaded Gas Appeared

snip

in 1975, when new vehicles were mandated to burn gasoline that didn't contain lead. That year, unleaded gasoline showed up at the neighborhood gas station."

According to my research Tricky http://www.mindfully.org/Pesticide/Lead-History.htm lead was outlawed in 1986. That's internet info so I could be wrong. My memory doesn't let me strain back that far because I did everything I could to fight the switch at the time including using modified filler necks and nozzles and whatnot. I was in total denial. Even the 1800 calls for plug change every 16000 miles. I imagine there are few people who change their plugs at that mileage.

My GM 6 cylinder at 363,000k is on its 3rd set of plugs.

The recommended spark plug change in my GM car is 100,000 miles and the mandated plug material is platinum but irridium is much more durable.

I put the NGK Iridium DPR8EIX9 in my 'Wing last spring and found them to be better than the stock items. Of course, it might just be me trying to justify the price!
