Volt meter and temp gauge acting up

I have an 86 aspy, it has been sitting in my garage for about two weeks, I have been out of town. I just installed a new seat and went for a ride to try it out. I noticed my volt meter flashing off and on, and then go down to 6 volts then up to 14 and stay there, when I shut the bike off and start it I get a low volt signal showing 6 volts then after a few seconds it works normal then it is all over the place again. The outside temp gauge is all over the place from + 40 to - 30. Looks like a dirty or loose connection, I don't think it is moisture because my garage is dry. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

If you connect the volt meter directly to the battery (temporarily) that might show you if the connection your using presently is OK.
I have the same one you have I think, that shows the outside temp and also the voltage. (a Honda model) They do show the lowest voltage for about 8 seconds after starting the bike but mine is about 9V. I have mine wired through a relay directly from the battery and the acc screw powers the relay.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

I would verify that all connections are clean and tight then check the gauges against a known good set.

Thanks guys. I did check the charging system out and it is charging fine. I went for another short ride and the volt meter seems to be working for now but the outside temp gauge is way out and all over the place. First I am going to check all the connections and go from there. I will let you know how I make out. Yes Tricky it is the same as yours, outside temp and voltage.
