Driving Lights Recommendations and Installation Procedures..
Well I thought I would start a new thread on Driving Lights.

Vic has convinced me to go with the Sylvanias on the headlight now I would like too see what you all do when you add driving lights.

Particularly how to install them properly. Indeed I read "get a relay" and use it.....but someone needs to spell it out for me. Which one? where obtained? Where do you put it?

I am good with electronics so if there is an installation schematic that would be MOST helpful. Tricky????

Also recommended lamps and wattage vs. lumen pros and cons as well.

I have cruised the internet and find a wide variety of lamps and pricing. I see some on sale at Harbour Frieght for only $9.00 a pair!

What type of mounting hardware do you improvise with?

Best location top of the engine guards?

Give me the 101~~~!!!

Thanks.

20 amp relay should be fine
from your local auto store
20 amp fuse from your battery for the main power.

The Accessory terminal is already fused and you wont be using much power to switch the relay

I would try and get them as high as possible, if they would work close to the ground, thats where Honda would have put the headlight Smile

Several ways to put them on,

I used the electrical hookup that Tricky outlines above and the JC Whitney light bar in Tricky's links and I find they work great. The lights that I use are black, not chrome, as I trim my bike in black to accent the yellow paint. The lights are 55 watt each, compact, wide beam spread so I can see animals on the side of the road at night which I can't see with the stock headlight plus these lights extend the low beam headlight distance by about 50 feet. Note: Tricky had big lights on this same light bar and it broke off so keep the lighting weight load on the light side. One big advantage of using this light setup is that it gets the lights up high which gives much better lighting over a distance than mounting the lights down low.

Smart thinking Angela, I installed a plug on mine as well to make repairs much easier if I ever need to remove the lower fairings for servicing. I sure don't regret installing those driving lights as they as life savers for night driving. Big Grin

That's a deal if they are the same. When I got mine at Princess Auto they were $49.99 They sure kick out the light for such a small enclosure.

Tropi: I added driving lights to the engine guard of my wing and do they ever light up the road,
I used a lighted switch without a relay, I don't see the point of using a relay if you don't have to.
If you use the accessory terminals you can still fuse the lights lower if required without any relay in the circuit, and the lighted switch on my dash lets me know at a glance that the lights are on or not.
