My windshield restoration
My (New to me) 1985 GL1200 is ready to roll now, I completed all the service and was prepared to order a new windshield and wait another week to ride.

This windshield had the micro scratches all over it and some more severe scratches, discoloration where bugs had been left on it.
This thing was trash.

I decided to experiment with it.

Try this at your own risk!!!!!!
It worked for me.

I took a soft towel, some mothers aluminum polish and went to work.

I started with a small amount in one corner and started rubbing it out,
After two times of buffing it out by hand it began to look new in that spot.

I continued with the whole windshield, buffing rubbing and polishing, all with the same mothers aluminum polish.

Finished it, washed it with Dawn dishwashing liquid to remove any petroleum that may have been in the polish, and let it dry.

I then took it outside to get a good look at it, it looked pretty good, except for very small scratch patterns from the polish.

I went to the local bike shop and purchased some Plexus and applied 2 coats and buffed it clean.

This windshield now looks Brand New!!!!!!!

No scratches, no discoloration, no stains..

Mine looks great.

scratches bother me most at night when an oncoming vehicle lights hits the windshield.

I have looked at this windshield from all angles and can not see a single scratch anywhere, I am totally amazed at how this worked out.

I used medium pressure and buffed circles and up and down.

repeated the process and presto.

then the plexus, and it looks brand new Confusedhock: Confusedhock: Confusedhock:

If you have a windshield that is in really bad shape you can block sand it with 2000 grit wet paper then polish back up to a fine finish using similar technique as what Jim describes or use a lambswool buffing wheel on a low speed polishing machine and a chemical for polishing paint on a car.

You should be able to buy Plexus at your local bike shops

Here is a website:

Guys, Meguiars makes (sells) wet sandpaper clear up to 3000 grit. You can find it at many Auto Body Supply Stores. They also have a complete line of buffing and polishing compounds designed for buffing out clear coats on cars.......I don't doubt that one of those products would do the job on a windshield.

I think the most important thing is not to sand or buff through the outer layer on the windshield.

Why make it so complicated guys?

Just try the mothers, took me all of 15 min to complete.

Not a copy, just a different approach. They did have a lot of very nice bikes but nothing as durable as the Gold Wing.
