Problem with starter
Working on an 84 Aspy has been sitting for a while when we went to install new battery as soon as you touched the cable to the post the bike would keep turning over. Never seen this problem before. Starter button doesn't seem to be stuck. Any ideas?

Possibly the starter solenoid/relay stuck in closed position.

Remove the plug from the relay, connect the battery if the starter turns probably the relay is stuck closed

if the starter doesnt turn, then some how the is a problem in the starter to solenoid wiring

Where the ohmmeter is connected, check if there is a reading BEFORE attaching the battery if the ohmmeter gives any reading the relay is closed, it should be open

The G/R and Y/R are the wires from the starter button,

Make sure there isn’t a short between the G/R and the Y/R at the solenoid. A single strand is all it takes to close the solenoid.
Make sure the starter button at the hand control is fully disengaged.

The usual culprit IS the solenoid.

Good Luck!

first thing i'd do is get the starter switch out of the circuit or clean it and see what happens when the battery is reconnected
