Sounds like the neutral safety switch is broken. No big deal except the bike will now start or turn over in gear with out disengaging the clutch. Pretty big job to repair. The front transmission cover has to be removed. Poorboy

Poorboy is correct in that the front cover needs to be removed to get to the switch and that it is not a small job.
Replacing the cover requires some paper and oring gaskets. The orings keep the oil going to and from the oil filter and the water going to and from the water pump, in seperate living quarters. They don't get along well and it is not a small job. Basically the same as changing a water pump.

Don't write if off just yet though.
There are wires coming from the switch which passes through the cover and into the main harness. The defect of the circuit may be in the area where the wire goes into the cover.
It might be repairable without removing the cover. The switch is just a ground when in neutral so the frayed wire MIGHT be shorting to ground somewhere.

If the wire is not repairable outside of the cover, then you will have to make sure the clutch lever is in before starting the engine.
Good Luck and be safe.
