Rear lights all flickering problem on indicating only
Hi Wingers.

My project 1200 State '84 is nearing
completion.

I've just installed the trunk corner
lights mod and linked the lights to
the saddlebag lights.
On turning all the lights on
I see 4 orange running lights
in all corners. 2 on the trunk
and 2 on the bags. I've
installed the little mod 1157 plug
harnesses. To enable running
lights in orange and redSad

I can see 4 red running lights
and it all looks right.
When I press the front or rear
brake. I've the lights bar brake
and 2 bag brake lights. It all
looks good.

All the bulbs are normal
bulbs until I source replacement
LEDS etc.

q) When I switch either turns.
All the lights flicker, not just the turns
but the orange and red running a too?
Strange this. All oem connections only?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Regards & thanks!

Thanks Joe!

All the lights work.
All stable.
When a turn signal is
activated, the light goes on/off
so does the red brake light,
both sides. Confusion?

Thanks again!

Hi Joe

I don't have an earth in my trunk.
What I'd to do was to replace
the whole harness as there wasn't
much harness left from
the 14 PO's :-).

The new harness fully works.
The bike starts on the button.
I might've missed this black trunk
wire. I've now checked the schematic and
I can see a green wire, from
the rear lights. I don't have a single
black wire. Is this OEM Joe?

Thanks

Hi Joe

Many thanks for the thumbnail!
It was very good of you.

I've this plug and it's all wired ok.
To the schematic.

It's not the trunk lights that
I've the problem with.
All the lights work.
It's when I test each turn signal.
They click on/off @ correct speed.
The red lights all pulsate at the same time,
in the saddlebags? Weird or what?

Thanks!

Ok let me try and get it straight.

Are your turn signals just in the lower saddle bags? not in the trunk?

Are your turn signals yellow lenses?

And your saddlebag taillights (red) are the ones flashing? and both L&R at the same time?

Are the trunk red lights flashing too?

Is the license plate lamp flashing?

You will notice in this attachment I used the aspencade which is basically what you have at least as far as the trunk lighting is concerned.

The brown wire to the trunk L&R and the license plate lamp is different to the brown wire going to the lower taillights.

They both emanate from stop and tail sensor, if you could get hold of another sensor to swap it out, that might be the problem.

Or the brown wire is shorted to the Orange on the left or Light brown on the right somehow.

"""""Brake And Taillight Sensor
System Inspection
Turn the ignition switch ON. The taillight warning light
should light for a few seconds and go out.
If the warning light does not light, check the warning light
bulb filament, fuse or wiring for an open or short circuit. If
there is no problem in the bulb or wiring, replace the
brake and taillight sensor with a new one.
If the warning light does not go out after a few seconds,
check the brake/taillight bulbs filament or fuse, and
replace if necessary.
If the brake/taillight bulb is OK, check the wiring for an
open or short circuit. If there is no problem in the wiring,
replace the brake and taillight sensor with a new one.""""

I would suggest disconnecting the trunk corner light modification you describe as recently attaching to the saddlebag lights, and go from there.

When troubleshooting, start at a base point, get that to function as designed, then add the modifications.

I suspect you have crossed the turn signal circuit with the running light circuit.

Thanks very much BS & Highway!

I've had to fit a new main harness
to the 1200 '84 Wing as the 14 POs
ruined it. 12 wires missing from the
rear. I've now wired it (first time)
with a replacement harness and
I followed the schematic, slowly and
carefully. On first switch on, most lights worked
and I discovered faulty brake/tail sensor
got all the others lights on.
A big learning curve!

The bike starts on the button.
No dash warning lights.

q) How would I find a faulty ground
that effects the running or turns
please? All the harness wire colors,
all match the components.

Thanks for all of your help!

Regards

Angel

Hi Wingers

I've just had a look at the '84
State color schematic and
noticed a solid green ground wire,
connected to the 3 pin trunk connection.
This is one wire (ground) that I can't
find on the bike. I will make a green link
wire and ground it, is this the cure
for the pulsating turns/running etc?

I will let you all know tomorrow!

Thanks for all the advise Wingers!

The ground from the trunk connection is connected to the ground from the saddlebags inside the harness.

..... and this is why fixing a short like this through a shop, is so expensive.
You just can't replace the broken part......... you have to find the break first!

Good Luck.

Many thanks BS & Sir Tricky!

Is there a additional link ground wire from
the three trunk plug 'green' (trunk lights)
to frame, to complete the circuit?
Another Winger mentioned
a black wire in the trunk!

Thanks y'all!

I think the main ground wire is on the frame under the seat, there is another location if memory serves me correct on the left side under the false tank on the regulator location bolt (could be wrong on this one though) been a while since I was in there.

Hi Tricky, BS and all other
Winger bros!..

Thank you all of you for helping
me.

I've now followed your advice and disconnected
the 'add on' corner turn/running
lights.
I only have the saddlebag lights
connected. The bag lights
have double filament 1157 in each
side. As you know this
means I've an orange left turn/running
and a left red running/brake light.
Obviously it's the same setup on
the right.
It looks good, yet when you
switch on the turns the orange
blinks as normal, the red joins
the orange and it all pulsates?

I've changed the brake light sensor,
no change.
I've changed the flasher relay,
no change.

When I did the replacement of the
main harness. I didn't see any
ground wires?

The pulsating lights, all flickering
is from the base set up,
not the add on trunk corner lights!

This is so frustrating?

Many thanks again Sir Tricky, BS
and all who have offered me
help! :-)x

Angel

Correction, sorry!

I do remember connecting
the battery ground.
I don't know the location
of all the grounds.

The bike turns & cranks and runs
like a good Honda. All the lights comes
on and responds (oil light off) etc.

Thanks again Wingers!

Regards

Angel

Interesting ,,, we shall get it right shortly (no pun intended)

The Left and right turn lamps are single filament bulbs (23 Watt)

The Brake and tail lamps are duel filament 27 Watt /7 watt

To make sure you have ground use a volt meter set to continuity and probe the green wires and the frame

Hi Tricky

What a star you're!
A big thank you.

The last owner fitted double
filaments 1157 bulb holders for the left
& right bags.
Oem was 1156 (single) 1157 (double)

I don't have any OEM bulb holders
to try the OEM set up.

q) could the after market double/double 1157/1157
bulb holders be the problem?

I've tried to find some OEM bulb
holders and being in the UK,
another rare item!

I've to try find out whether I've
missed the frame grounds,
when installing the replacement
main harness.

Thanks Sir Tricky, Guru!
