Rear tire question for my GL1200I

My brother-in-law is the service manager at the local Honda shop. He has a new Bridgestone 160/80-15 tire with a 74 load rating that he will give me. The stock size tire is a 150/90-15. Will this tire work on my bike? With this tire being a little wider I am concerned about clearance issues. Any help would be appreciated!! Thank you!

there is already minimal clearance on the 1200,but since the price is right and if you need a tire it might be worth the time to try it,hopefully someone else who has tried it before will chime in

I agree, the E3 barely cleared on my bike. The Shinko tourmaster is a little narrower, leaves a little more room.

The freebie tire may fit, but it would be a ton of work to swap it out and find it is too wide.

Thank all of you for your responses. With a couple of kids in college money is tight but because there is a good chance that this tire may rub I may just buy a Shinko Tour Master. I noticed this AM that my rear tire is starting to show thread so I gotta do something quick!!

For the money the Shinko is a great tire. Unless you put huge miles on you won't be sorry. JMHO Good luck

The Bridgestone tire is going to be too wide to use on my bike. I did some serious measuring of both tires and looked at the space between the tire and drive shaft housing and came to the conclusion that the 160/80/15 won't work. Thank all of you very much for your input!!!

One thing that baffles me though is how some people get the 165/80-15 car tire to work on their 1200's? It would seem as though it would be way too wide!! I thought about trying the Nexon 165/80-15.

It has been over a week and no response to your idea of using a car tire for a motorcycle application.
I would have thought it would have opened a large can of worms........ I am glad it didn't.

If you are considering spending the money on a (new?) car tire, as mentioned, consider the Shinko Tour Master. The mileage and wet/dry performance can't be beat for the price.

I have gotten anywhere from 11,000 to 14,000 commuter miles out of a Shinko Tour Master mounted on the rear.

I appreciate all your responses to this thread. After I bought my 1200 the first rear tire I put on the bike was a Shinko Tour Master and only got about 4000 miles. The tire I have on there now is a Duro HF296-C and it has a little over 6000 miles. I really wish that the 165/80-15 car tire would work but I don't think my bike would have enough clearance. I am not sure what I am going to do yet.

That is weird.
I have had good mileage out of the front and rear Tour Master's I have mounted.
Since I have owned my bike, it has only had Shinko Tour Master's and I have not been disappointed.
I recently put on the fourth rear tire and I have put approximately 44,000 on the bike since I have owned it.
So, I find it puzzling you had such bad luck with the Tour Master.

Thanks bs175dths!! I really liked the way the Shinko tires handled and rode. Just did not like the mileage I got out of them. Some people seem to think we get less mileage on tires here in Texas because of the types of roads we have and the extreme summer heat. I really don't know. I am not a hard rider and try to to care of my tires the best I can.

165-80-r15 nexen is 5.5 inches over all on the width and may be and 1 inch taller, it should clear ever thing easily. The problem is the motor cycle wheel is .125 of inch bigger than car wheel, so the tire is hard to seat on the bike rim. There was two machine shops local that could turn a 15+ wheel, both shops are gone.

I installed the 160/80-15 and it indeed did rub on the drive shaft housing!!! I bought a Shinko Tour Master and have installed it. I am good to go for a while now. Thank all of your for your responses!!
