ticking sound?
Just started in the last week or so, but getting more often.

Sounds like lifters? Does the GL1200 need valve adjustments?

Both sides or either side, ticking sound, may stop for 30 miles then start up again.

If valves, what is the clearance suppose to be?

Check the oil level, no adjustment on the lifters.
try a different brand of oil. I use delo 400

Maybe try adding a bottle of seafoam to the oil, drain out the same amount. then add the seafoam, then run for about 300 miles, then change the oil using delo 400
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

In addition to what has already been suggested, I would also suggest using a stethoscope and do some probing around your running engine.
As was already mentioned, the GL1200's do not have adjustable valves as Honda uses a zero clearance design.

In lieu of a stethoscope, you can use a piece of wooden dowel. Place one end on the area where you want to pick up the sound from, and listen at the other end. The wood will transmit the sound waves easily. It won't amplify the sound at all like a stethoscope can, but it should be useful enough to at least locate the area that it's coming from. And, you won't have to risk placing your hand/fingers that close to a hot motor.

Until recently I used to use a long screw driver.
Same as using the dowel.

I used to recommend a screw driver until I got asked, 'Philip or Slot'?
Then it dawned on me, I might be liable if someone puts the wrong end up against (or in) their ear.

Now I just recommend a stethoscope.....
