Brake caliper retainer clip ???

Hey guys
I just finished re-mounting my rear wheel and tire after getting a new EIII put on this week When I was finished I found a little retainer clip laying on the floor......had to take the saddle bag and brake caliper back off to re-install this little clip. I got it back where it goes and everything looks good....question is, what the heck does that little retainer do? It fits between the caliper and caliper bracket. Thanks for any input............ |

I have one left over from my last FRONT wheel removal...it's still sitting on my bench somewhere... I have no clue what it is SUPPOSED to do, but it works pretty good without it! 8)

The only thing I could think of was to keep the like metals of the caliper and caliper bracket from reacting to each other due to friction?? I just can't think of anything else that silly little clip would do. It is a common part....I saw them listed from the 1100's clear through the 1500's....
I bet Vic knows what they're for, he is just getting a good chuckle out of us bike hackers trying to guess what they are....... |

Yeah, well... since we're making confessions, I have one somewhere from my front wheel too, couldnât figure it out either. Like you said, working fine without it.

If it is what I think you are explaining :?:
Part #43112-445-631 - retainer. This goes between the caliper and the mounting bracket on the top side of the caliper. Is a spring to tension the caliper. If you have have the wing rear wheel off the ground and move the tire back and forth you may hear a clunking sound. This spring helps reduce/eliminate this noise/slop. IMHO..........Howard

That is the part. What you say makes sense, although mine didn't seem to have much tension on it. Just kind of sits there. Like me at the family reunion..... hock:

The exact same thing happened again, nearly 2 years later!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything back together after tire change, that stupid little clip is laying on the garage floor. I might put it under my pillow tonight and see if the Gold Wing fairy brings me something!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *-
