O well,
I pulled the carb rack this morning, found 1 Float valve frozen shut on the left bank, this carb was completely trashed, very dirty. and one open on the right bank. the rest of the carb interiors looked great, diaphrams were good, floats and hardware is in great shape. more later. Jim |

Posting step-by-step pictures would be a great help to those members who would tackle such a job. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.

Hi Jim, I've been away on vacation and just got to see you invitation now. I think that it would be great to see some step by step close up pics that we can use as a reference on this site. I look forward to seeing them laid out here.

Hi Jim;
I'm new to the forum and membership but I have this precise problem with my 86 Aspy and I'm looking to rebuild my carbs. I have been unable to get my Wing to idle without the choke engaged. I have tried running carb cleaner through the gas lines but it has only marginally inmproved. It would certainly help me to view pictures of your successful efforts. Are you buying aftermarket rebuild kits or will you wait until you tear them down to buy specific replacement parts and seals? Any recommendation where best to get the parts? I have both the Clymer's and Honda Shop Manual to refer to but your real-world experiece is probably invaluable and far more detailed. Thanks for your help on this. Bill |

It's too bad you couldn't hold off for Randakk's carb kit due to come out November 1st. My carbs are showing signs of needing attention and as soon as I can get my hands on Randakk's kit I'm tearing my carbs down and rebuilding them.

Jim & Admin;
Thanks for the propmt responses! I appreciate the pictures and will be looking forward to monitoring the rebuild process. What is the link to imagecave ... http://www.imagecave.com ? I know this is work to document this carb-rebuild process but I think you will be really surprised at the level of interest this will generate. Unfortunately, carburetor-fouling is one of the weak design points of the GL1200, particularly if it is not a daily-rider. I am not aware of the Randakk carb rebuild kits? Are these special to the GL1200? How do/will they differ from the Goldwing OEM parts or the K&L Kits? I have been considering picking up a used 86 Aspy carb set that is in good running condition (if I can find one at a reasonable cost) to use while I tear down my carbs and rebuild them. I woud reinstall my carbs after they are rebuilt and resell the extra set. Does anyone know if the 86 Aspy and the 87 Aspy carb sets are interchangeable? I know there is a difference between the 84/85 carb sets and the 86/87 carb sets ... different vaccuum hose arrangements, but I'm not sure if the 86 and 87 are truly interchangeable? If I can pick up the extra carb set, it may be November 1st by the time I get to rebuild the ones off my bike. Tell me more about the Randakk carb kits or point me to their website. I definitely appreciate everyone's collective wisdom on this topic. BTW Jim, I'm not there yet but I will be interested in the GL1200 LED conversion kits at some point. I'll check out your website. Thanks, Bill |

Thank you Bill.
Yes the imagecave address is correct. Im not sure at all about the interchange you spoke of. Randaks site is here: http://www.randakks.com/ But I dont think his 1200 kits are ready yet. When They are Im sure they will be the best. The rebuild process can be done easily on one Saturday or day of your choice. These are great carb kits, not the best maybe but they should last the life of the bike. the stock parts lasted 22 years!! http://cgi.ebay.ca/HONDA-GL1200-K-L-CAR ... dZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.ca/HONDA-GL1200-INTAKE- ... dZViewItem |
